One more life - it's not the way we want to go.....

For several months, this long corriodor was the only out of home destination. Long and silent, I cannot forget even those small things towards this place, which we made it our beautiful destination, enjoying the trees and flowers around. The small refreshment outlet, the fresh juice vending machine, the packed food, and the food packets provided to those who visit this holy desintation. It is not that we didn't have any other place to go. But, it was out of choice.

My dear Amma, one more person joined you to the dream world, outside our world. I have done whatever I could do, to return the kindness showered to us by her and her colleagues, whenever we visited that only leisure destination of ours for a long time. I miss you a lot.

Sister Anila Thomas of Mafraq hospital, Abu Dhabi. She will be leaving Abu Dhabi tomorrow, Wednesday, 7th March 2012 night, for the final time. It is not the way, we want anyone of us to go from here.

Embalming and prayer ceremony is at Abu Dhabi Centre Hospital, tomorrow 7th March 2012 at 3:00 pm and funeral day after at her native place near Chengannur, Kerala, on 8th March.

My prayers for her soul to rest in peace.

What a match man! What to say? All through the last two months the team saved me from my valuable TV time with display on fiield and off. Honestly, I have never been a big fan of you for your four lettered usages, but today, just take time to salute you man.

"When you are winning you can stay on tour for five months. You won't mind a single day, but when you are not doing well as a team it is really difficult to hold yourself together mentally". That was his post match comment. Sidharth Monga wrote it rightly at cricinfo "There is something dangerous about those who have lost it all."

We, as mad cricket fans, have lot to look forward if you play like this. Well done, but as usual, we all put ourselves and love to be in situations to be at the mercy of others, or their deeds to move ahead. I am not different and my national cricket team too. No choice other than to wait till Australia play Sri Lanka and hopefully win over them in the next match.

Pet alert: Vicious dogs brought to book

Authorities distribute booklets on dangerous breeds so that the cannine calamity that struck Dubai Pet Show is not repeated.

Dubai: Following a controversy surrounding the death of a toy poodle caused by an American Staffordshire terrier at Dubai Pet Show, the debate rages about whether certain breeds of dog, including all types of pitbulls, should be banned as pets.

While authorities have stepped up efforts to educate the public on the import of vicious dog breeds, dog owners have mixed views.

Following the incident, booklets issued by the Government of Dubai and Dubai Municipality were found outside doors at veterinary clinics and homes across Dubai. The book, written in Arabic and English, serves as a reminder that "there are many breeds of dogs of an aggressive nature and dangerous to public safety".

Although in distribution since 2008, the booklet has gathered renewed interest since February 3 incident. Titled Vicious Dog Breeds, the book lists dog breeds banned from importation into Dubai; breeds banned from being kept in apartments and shared accommodation and the reasons behind the ban.

There have been over 150 cases of dog bites and attacks investigated by the veterinary services section in Dubai Municipality from 2007 to the end of 2010.
However, just as important is the safety of the animals.
According to information from Dubai Municipality, "most of these [banned] breeds are used for wrestling and fighting, which is considered a violation of animal welfare legislation and laws". The book states that it's important to provide proper space to these animals to express their natural behaviour, thereby forbidding certain breeds in flats. "Maintaining the safety of animals also involves protecting the animals from being used as a target for hitting by arrows, or enjoying dog wrestling, as our Prophet (PBUH) forbade us in so many traditions."
Residents, meanwhile, have mixed opinions. Linda Fernando, a Mirdif pet owner, says that although she has nothing against any breed of dog, she leans towards the belief that not all breeds make ideal pets. "I would like to know why people feel the need to have these specific breeds in their homes. They may be cute and cuddly for a little while, but just as suddenly they may also go the opposite way. In countries such as New Zealand and Australia, if you do somehow own one of these breeds, it is compulsory to have them sterilised and muzzled at all times when out in public. Anyone who gets caught with a dangerous dog left unmuzzled would be taken to court," she says.
Storme W, a Jumeirah resident, who shares her home with two American Staffordshire terriers, says, "My Staffies aren't dangerous. They wouldn't harm a fly, but if the law says they need to be muzzled in public, then muzzled they will be. However, if I'm just taking my two girls out for a walk, I won't muzzle them. We'll go to a quiet area, away from the public. When we went to the dog show earlier this month, both my dogs had on a soft muzzle which wouldn't hurt them. But as to why they are banned breeds, I'll never understand."
UK dog behaviourist and Abu Dhabi expat Jane Sigsworth said: "Back in the UK, we have a saying about dogs: Deeds, not breeds. What that means is that a dog should be judged on its own merit and individuality, not on its breed," she says. "Just because two dogs share a breed does not necessarily mean they share a behaviour."
Despite the banning of certain breeds, the number of annual dog bites has not decreased. "Banning breeds doesn't always work," says Sigsworth. "What we need is to educate people. Dog owners need to learn their pet's language. Most dogs would never bite out of the blue, they always give out warning signals which people fail to read. Attacks could be prevented if people were more educated about their dogs," said Sigsworth.

I was a participant at the Terry Fox Run that happened at Abu Dhabi Corniche on 17th. I witnessed some bringing along their pet dogs, some of them looking fierce in size and expressions. In the wake of the recent incident that happened at the Dog Show in Dubai, I address a concern: should we allow pet dogs to be brought to public events of this magnitude, where large gathering, including toddlers, children and all others are present. If by chance another dog pass by and intimidate or even due to any other reason, the dog, which is even though on a leash get intimidated, the scene would turn nasty. I love dogs, do have them back home with proper care and exercise and control, and not am against having them as our favorite pet. However, on a public gathering of this size, I raise concern whether they should be allowed in by authorities who organise them or even by public authorities as a standard restriction.

Campaign - Clean up your medicine chest

I was alarmed by the unused medicines lying at the medicine chest at my home. I can imagine the reason, because, many times medicines prescribed are not consumed in full. This is the quantity cleared, usable and not expired during this week-end clean up.
Why not you devote a few minutes during this weekend to clear medicine chest at your home too.

I am sure, you will save some space, avoid children/elders taking medicines already expired.

I am not sure, these days, organisations take in those non-expired medicines that could be reused, if so, it will save money for some needy and come handy to those poor patients.

Any campaigners to take my thoughts, welcome in advance.

ഈയിടെ വാര്‍ത്താ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ എടുത്താല്‍ കാണുന്ന പ്രധാന വാര്‍ത്തകളില്‍ ഒന്ന്, ഒരു തൂങ്ങി മരണമോ, കെട്ടിടത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ചാടിയുള്ള ആത്മഹത്യയെ പറ്റി ഉള്ള വാര്‍ത്തയാണ്. എന്നെ വല്ലാതെ അലട്ടുന്ന ഒരു സാമൂഹിക പ്രശ്നം. കഴിഞ്ഞ അഞ്ചു വര്‍ഷത്തിനിടയില്‍ എന്റെ അടുത്ത് അറിയാവുന്ന മൂന്ന് സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ഈ വഴി സ്വീകരിച്ചു വിട പറഞ്ഞു. അവരുടെ ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍, അവരുടെ കുടുംബത്തിന്‍റെ നഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ എന്റെതിനെക്കാലും വളരെ വലിയതാണ്. എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു അവസ്ഥയില്‍ മനുഷ്യന്‍ എത്തി ചേരുന്നു.. ആ ഒരു മാര്‍ഗം സ്വീകരിക്കാന്‍ എന്താണ് അവനിലോ അവളിലോ ഒരു പ്രചോദനം ആവുന്നത്.

ഒരു അഞ്ചു കൊല്ലം മുനമ്പ് എന്റെ ഒരു പ്രിയ സുഹൃത്തിന്റെ പത്നി അബുദാബിയിലെ ഒരു പതിനഞ്ചു നില കെട്ടിടത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ചാടി ജീവിതം അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചു. വളരെ സ്നേഹമയിയായ ഒരു വീട്ടമ്മ. രണ്ടു കുട്ടികള്‍ - മൂത്ത പെണ്‍കുട്ടി അന്ന് ഏഴിലോ മറ്റോ പഠിക്കുന്നു, രണ്ടാമത്തെ ആള്‍ ആണ്‍കുട്ടി നാലാം തരത്തിലും. സന്തുഷ്ട കുടുംബം. സ്നേഹിതര്‍ക്കു എന്നും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവര്‍. എന്ത് വിശേഷം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും അതിനു അവര്‍ എല്ലാ സ്നേഹിതരെയും വിളിച്ചു വിഭവ സമൃദ്ധമായ കേരളീയ സദ്യ, നല്ല തൃശൂര്‍ സ്റ്റൈലില്‍ തന്നെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് എല്ലാവര്ക്കും തരും. അത് അവരുടെ സന്തോഷമായിരുന്നു. ഞങ്ങളുടെ, അന്നത്തെ കാലത്ത് ബാച്ചലര്‍ ജീവിതം നയിച്ചിരുന്ന ആ കുടുംബ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുടെ ഒരു അനൌപചാരികമായ അവകാശവും ആയിരുന്നു. കാലക്രമേണ അവര്‍ക്ക് വാത രോഗത്തിന്റെ ഏതോ ഒരു ഭീഗരമായ വകബേധം ഭാദിച്ചു അതിന്റെ കടിന്യങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് അവര്‍ക്ക് സഹിക്കാന്‍ പറ്റാതായി. സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍ ആയ ഞങ്ങളോടോ അവരുടെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുക്കളോടോ പറയാതെ അവര്‍ അവരുടെ ജീവിതം പതിനഞ്ചാം നിലയില്‍ നിന്ന് ചാടി അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചു. ഏറ്റവും ക്രൂരമായ ഒരു വിധി എന്തായിരുന്നു എന്ന് വച്ചാല്‍ അവര്‍ ചാടി വീണത്‌, ആ കേട്ടിനടുത്തുള്ള മറ്റൊരു കെട്ടിടം നിര്‍മിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെ കമ്പികള്‍ക്ക്‌ ഇടയിലേക്കാണ്. ശരീരത്തില്‍ ആകമാനം കമ്പികള്‍ കുതികയറി ഏകദേശം അവര്‍ മൂന്ന് മണിക്കൂറോളം മരിക്കാതെ മരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ബന്ധുക്കളും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും അവരെ കാണാതായി അന്വേഷണം ആരംഭിച്ചു കണ്ടെത്തിയപ്പോഴേക്കും അവരുടെ ജീവന്‍ ഒട്ടുമിക്കവാറും പോയിപ്പോയിരുന്നു.

എന്തായിരുന്നിരിക്കാം ആ മൂന്ന് മനിക്കൊരുകള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍, ഒര്മയുണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ അവരുടെ മനസ്സിലൂടെ ഓടി നടന്നിരുന്ന ചിന്തകള്‍. തീര്‍ത്തും നല്ല ഒരു ഭക്തയായിരുന്ന അവര്‍ എന്തായാലും ഈശ്വരനോട് പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കാം ഭഗവാനെ എനിക്ക് ഒരു അവസ്സരം കൂടി ജീവിക്കാന്‍ നല്‍കൂ എന്ന്.

രണ്ടാമത്തെ സുഹൃത്തും എനിക്ക് വളരെ പ്രിയനായിരുന്നു. ഞാന്‍ ഇവിടെ അബുദാബിയില്‍ വന്ന നാള്‍ മുതല്‍ പരിചയം ഉള്ള ഒരു വ്യക്തി. അന്ന് ചെറിയ ഒരു സ്ഥാപനത്തില്‍ ചെറിയ ഒരു ജോലിയില്‍ ഇരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം ക്രമേണ സ്വ പ്രയത്നം കൊണ്ട് വളര്‍ന്നു ആ സ്ഥാപനത്തിന്റെ മാനേജര്‍ പദവിയില്‍ എത്തി. അതിനിടയില്‍ അദേഹത്തിന്, ഡ്രൈവിംഗ് ലൈസന്‍സ് കിട്ടി, അന്നത്തെ കാലത്ത് ഒരു മഹാ സംഭവം. ഉടനെ തന്നെ എന്നോട് വിളിച്ചു ആ സന്തോഷം പങ്കിട്ടു. പിന്നെ വിവാഹിതനായി, കുട്ടികള്‍ ആയി. കലാ സാംസ്കാരിക മേഖലകളില്‍ താല്പര്യം ഉള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അതെ താല്പര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഉള്ള പത്നിയെ കൂടി കിട്ടിയപ്പോള്‍, രണ്ടു പേരും കുട്ടികളും അബുദാബിയിലെ കലാ സാംസ്കാരിക രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നിന്നു.

ആഴ്ചയില്‍ ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും ഞങ്ങള്‍ തമ്മില്‍ കാണുകയോ സംസാരിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യുമായിരുന്നു. എത്ര തിരക്കായാലും മുടങ്ങാതെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ഒരു സൌഹൃദം. എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് മൂന്ന് നാല് കൊല്ലം മുന്‍പുള്ള ആ ഒരു മാസ്സ കാലം എന്റെ തിരക്ക് കൊണ്ട് അദ്ധേഹത്തെ ഫോണില്‍ വിളിക്കാനോ സംസാരിക്കാനോ പറ്റിയില്ല . അങ്ങനെ ഒരു ദിവസ്സം തിരക്കിനിടയില്‍ ഇവിടത്തെ ഒരു പ്രമുഖ സംഘടനയില്‍ നിന്നു കാലത്ത് ഒരു അറിയിപ്പ് വന്നു. തങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന മെമ്പര്‍ ഇന്നലെ രാത്രി മരണപ്പെട്ടു എന്ന്. ആ ഫോട്ടോ കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ തീര്‍ത്തും തരിച്ചിരുന്നു പോയി. തന്റെ പ്രിയ സുഹൃത്ത് ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. അതെ അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ ഏതോ ഒരു കസ്റ്റമര്‍ നടത്തിയ സാമ്പത്തിക ചതിയില്‍ പെട്ട് അദ്ദേഹം വലഞ്ഞു, ഇനി ഒരു രക്ഷയും ഇല്ല പണം തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടാന്‍ എന്നും ആത്മഹത്ത്യ അല്ലാതെ വേറൊന്നു സ്വാഭിമാനം രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ മാര്‍ഗം ഇല്ലാ എന്ന് സ്വയം തീരുമാനിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം ആ കടും കൈ ചെയ്തു.

ആ കടുത്ത തീരുമാനം എടുക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ച അദ്ധേഹത്തെ ആ സാഹചര്യത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ച അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിയെ തടയാനോ, അദേഹത്തിന് ഒരു ശാശ്വത പരിഹാരം അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ താല്‍ക്കാലികമായ ഒരു പോംവഴി എങ്കിലും പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തെയും അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ കുടുംബത്തെയോ ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ എന്ന് ഞാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു പോയി. ഇത്രയും വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും ആ രണ്ടു വിയോഗങ്ങളും ഇന്നും മനസ്സില്‍ മാറാതെ കറുത്ത പാടുകലായി കിടക്കുന്നു എന്നത് നിങ്ങള്‍ മനസ്സിലാകിയാല്‍ അതിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം എത്രയുണ്ട് എന്ന് മനസ്സിലാവും.

ഈ അടുത്ത് സ്വയം തൂങ്ങി മരണപ്പെട്ട അബുദാബിയിലെ ഒരു സാമൂഹിക പ്രവര്‍ത്തകന്റെ വിയോഗവും ഈ ലേഖനം ഇപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ എഴുതാന്‍ എന്നെ പ്രചോതിതനാക്കി. എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് മനുഷ്യന്‍ സ്വയം ജീവിതം അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനം എടുക്കുന്നു. എവിടെ നമ്മുടെ സാംസ്കാരിക സംഘടനകള്‍? സാമൂഹ്യ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍? സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍? കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങള്‍?

ഇന്ന് പലിശ സംഘങ്ങളും അതി ക്ര്രൂരമായി ഒരു പരിജ്ഞാനവും ഇല്ലാതെ തങ്ങളുടെ ഉപഭോക്താക്കളോട് ഫോണിലൂടെയും നേരിട്ടും കര്‍ശന വാക്കുകളും പ്രവര്‍ത്തികളും പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്നവര്‍ ഗണ്യമായി വര്‍ധിച്ചു വരുന്നതായി കാണാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നു. ഒരു നിമിഷത്തെ മനസ്സിന്റെ ചാഞ്ചല്യം മതി ഒരു ജീവന്‍ അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാന്‍. അങ്ങനെ നീച്ച മാര്‍ഗങ്ങള്‍ വാക്കുകളാലും പ്രവര്‍ത്തി കൊണ്ടും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് തങ്ങളുടെ നൈമിഷികങ്ങളായ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങള്‍ സ്വീകരിച്ചു മനുഷ്യ ജീവന് ഒട്ടും വില കല്‍പ്പിക്കാതെ പെരുമാറി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നവരെ കണ്ടെത്തി സമൂഹത്തിനു മുന്‍പില്‍ കൊണ്ടുവരേണ്ട സമയം അതിക്രമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഗള്‍ഫ്‌ രാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ വളര്‍ന്നു വരുന്ന ആത്മഹത്യാ പ്രവണത നിയന്ത്രിക്കാന്‍ സമൂഹത്തിനും സാമൂഹിക സംഘടനങ്ങള്‍ക്കും എന്ത് ചെയ്യാന്‍ കഴിയും എന്നാ ചോദ്യത്തോടെ ഞാന്‍ ഇനി ഒരു ജീവനും, ആത്മഹത്യയിലൂടെ ഇവിടെ നഷ്ടപ്പെടാതിരിക്കട്ടെ എന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് നിങ്ങളുടെ അഭിപ്രായങ്ങള്‍ ആരായുന്നു.

ഇരിങ്ങാലക്കുട ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര്‍ സ്മാരക കലനിലയത്തിലെ സീനിയര്‍ പ്രൊഫസര്‍ കലാനിലയം ഗോപി ആശാനും സംഘവും കല അബുദാബിയുടെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില്‍ നടത്തിയ കേരളീയം 2010 എന്ന പരിപാടിയില്‍ ലവണാസുരവധം കഥകളി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുയണ്ടായി. ഇത് നാലാം തവണയാണ് കല അബുദാബി കഥകളി യു എ യില്‍ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്‌. അബുദാബി ഇന്ത്യ സോഷ്യല്‍ സെന്ററില്‍ വച്ച് നടന്ന പരിപാടിയില്‍ ഒരു വന്‍ ജനാവലി തന്നെ പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നു. ഈ വരവിനോടനുബന്ധിച്ചു തിരനോട്ടം ദുബായ് ഒരു കഥകളിപദ കച്ചേരിയും ചര്‍ച്ചയും ദുബായില്‍ നടത്തുകയുണ്ടായി. അബുദാബി മലയാളി സമാജത്തിലും കഥകളി ആസ്വാധന ക്ലാസും ചര്‍ച്ചയും നടന്നു. ഈ മൂന്ന് പരിപാടികളും പങ്കെടുത്ത കാണികളുടെ സംഖ്യാ ബലവും അതില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തു കലാകരന്മാരോട് അവര്‍ നല്‍കിയ സ്നേഹാധാരങ്ങളും യുറോപ്യന്‍ രാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര്‍ കലാനിലയം സംഘത്തിന്‍റെ കൂടെ പര്യടനം നടത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള ഗോപി

ആശാന്‍റെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഗള്‍ഫ്‌ സന്ദര്‍ശനം ഒരു വിജയമായി എന്ന് തീര്‍ത്തും സൂചിപ്പിക്കാം.

അബുദാബിയില്‍ നിന്ന് നാട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് ഗോപി ആശാനും അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ ശിഷ്യന്മാരില്‍ പ്രധാനിയും തിരുവനന്തപുരം റിജിയണല്‍ കാന്‍സര്‍ സെന്റര്‍ ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിലെ ഡോക്ടറുമായ രാജീവുമായി ഏതാനും നിമിഷങ്ങളില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങി നിന്ന ഒരു കൂടികാഴ്ചക്കും സൌഹൃദ സംഭാഷണത്തിനും എനിക്ക് അവസ്സരം കിട്ടി. ആ അസുലഭ നിമിഷങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും ഏതാനും ഭാഗങ്ങള്‍:

RM: നമസ്കാരം ഗോപി ആശാന്‍, എന്റെ കോളേജ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ കാലത്തിനു ശേഷം പ്രവസ്സ ജീവിതം തുടങ്ങിയതിനു പിന്നീട് ആശാനെയും ആശാന്റെ കളിയും കാണാന്‍ കിട്ടുന്ന ആദ്യ അവസ്സരമാണിത്. വളരെ അധികം സന്തോഷം തോന്നുന്നു. ആശാന്റെ സംഘത്തില്‍ ഉള്ളവരെ പറ്റി ഒന്ന് വിവരിക്കാമോ?

KG: സംഗത്തില്‍ പത്തു പേരാണ് ഉള്ളത്. പ്രധാന വേഷം (ഹനുമാന്‍) ഞാന്‍ കെട്ടുന്നു. സീതയായി കലാനിലയം വിനോദ് കുമാര്‍, കുശന്‍ ആയി കാവ്യ പുഷ്പാങ്കതന്‍, ലവനായി ഐശ്വര്യാ ഗോപി, സംഗീതം കലാനിലയം രാജീവന്‍, കലാനിലയം ബാബു, ചെണ്ട കലാമണ്ഡലം ശിവദാസ്‌, മദ്ധളം കലാനിലയം പ്രകാശന്‍, ചുട്ടി ജനാര്‍ദ്ദനന്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഡോക്ടര്‍ രാജീവ്‌ ഞങ്ങളുടെ അവതാരകന്‍ ആയി കൂടെ ഉണ്ട്.

RM: ആശാന്റെ കഥകളി വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ്സത്തെ പറ്റി ഏതാനും വാക്കുകള്‍

KG: ഞാന്‍ 1971 മുതല്‍ കഥകളി കലനിലയത്തില്‍ പഠിക്കുകയും തുടര്‍ന്ന് അവിടെ തന്നെ ഡിപ്ലോമയും, ബിരുദാനന്തര പഠനവും നടത്തിയതിനു ശേഷം അവിടെ അധ്യാപകനായി ചേര്‍ന്നു. മുടങ്ങാതെ ഇന്നും തുടര്‍ന്ന് പോകുന്ന അഭ്യാസ്സവും കഥകളി എന്ന കലയോടുള്ള എന്റെ അടങ്ങാത്ത ആധാരവും അഭിനിവേശവും കൊണ്ട് ഞാന്‍ ഇന്ന് ആ കലാലയത്തിലെ ഒരു മുതിര്‍ന്ന അധ്യാപകനായി വേഷം വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ തലവനായി ജോലി നോക്കുന്നു.

RM: താങ്കളുടെ ഗുരുക്കള്‍?

KG: പള്ളിപ്പുറം ഗോപലന്‍ നായര്‍, സദനം കൃഷ്ണന്‍കുട്ടി, കലാമണ്ഡലം കുട്ടന്‍, കലാനിലയം രാഘവന്‍, കലാനിലയം ഗോപലകൃഷ്ണന്‍ എന്നിവരായിരുന്നു എന്റെ ഗുരുനാഥന്മാര്‍. ചിട്ടയായ അഭ്യാസ്സവും, ഗുരുകുല വാസ സമ്പ്രദായവും കഠിനമായ പരിശീലന ക്രമങ്ങളും എന്നെ ഒരു നല്ല ശിഷ്യനും പിന്നീട് ഒരു നല്ല ഗുരുനാഥനും ആക്കി മാറ്റാന്‍ നിമിത്തമായി. ഉപരി പഠനം പദ്മഭൂഷന്‍ കലാമണ്ഡലം രാമന്‍കുട്ടി നായരുടെ കീഴില്‍ കലാമണ്ഡലം ആസ്ഥാനം ആയിട്ടായിരുന്നു.

RM: ആശാന്റെ പ്രധാന വേഷങ്ങള്‍ ഏതൊക്കെയാണ്?

KG :ഇതിനോടകം കഥകളിയിലെ ഒട്ടുമിക്ക പ്രധാന വേഷങ്ങള്‍ കെട്ടി ആടാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു എന്നുള്ളത് വളരെ സന്തോഷം ഉള്ള കാര്യമാണ്. എന്റെ അസ്വാധകര്‍ക്ക് വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും കാണണം എന്നുള്ള വേഷങ്ങള്‍ ഹനുമാന്‍, കീചകന്‍, ദുര്യോധനന്‍ പരശുരാമന്‍, ബ്രാഹ്മണന്‍, ഭീമന്‍, അര്‍ജുനന്‍ എന്നിവയാണ്.

RM: താങ്കള്‍ക്ക് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പുരസ്കാരങ്ങള്‍ ?

KG: 2003 ഇല്‍, കേരള കലാമണ്ഡലം വക കഥകളിക്കു ഉള്ള സമഗ്ര സേവനത്തിനുള്ള പ്രത്യേക പുരസ്കാരം ലഭിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. കൂടാതെ, തനിമ ഇരിങ്ങാലക്കുടയുടെ വക പുരസ്കാരവും ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മറ്റു ഒട്ടനവധി ചെറിയ പുരസ്കാരങ്ങളും ആദരവുകളും വേറെ.

RM: താങ്കള്‍ എന്ന് മുതല്‍ ആണ് കഥകളി അഭ്യസിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയത്? പ്രധാന ശിഷ്യര്‍?

KG: 1980 മുതല്‍ കഥകളി പഠിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ആദ്യത്തെ ശിഷ്യന്‍ പ്രഭാകരന്‍ എന്ന ഒരു വിദ്ധ്യാര്‍ത്തി ആയിരുന്നു. ഇതോടകം 200 ഇല്‍ അധികം പ്രതിഭകളെ വളര്‍ത്തിയെടുക്കാന്‍ എനിക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞതില്‍ വളരെ അധികം ചാരിധാര്‍ത്ഥ്യം ഉണ്ട്. ജയന്തി, Dr. രാജീവ്‌, വിനോദ് വാര്യര്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ അവരില്‍ ചിലര്‍. ചിട്ടയായ അഭ്യാസ രീതികളും ശിഷ്യരോടുള്ള താല്‍പര്യവും അവരെ എന്നും കലയില്‍ മുന്നില്‍ തന്നെ നില്ക്കാന്‍ പര്യപ്തമാക്കുന്ന വിധത്തില്‍ വളര്‍ത്തിയെടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നു.

Dr. R: ആശാന്റെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന രീതിയെ പറ്റി, ഇതിനിടയില്‍ ഞാന്‍ ഒന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു കൊള്ളട്ടെ. പൂര്‍ണ അര്‍പ്പണ മനോഭാവവും, സമര്‍പ്പണവും കൂടി ചിട്ടയും നിഷ്ഠയും കൂടിയ അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ അധ്യായന രീതി എന്നും ശിഷ്യര്‍ക്ക് ആത്മ വിശ്വാസ്സവും ദൈര്യവും ക്രിയാല്‍മകതയും നല്‍കുന്നു. എത്ര കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞാലും ആ പാഠങ്ങള്‍ മനസ്സില്‍ ഉള്ളില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കും. ഒരു പ്രത്യക്ഷ ഉദാഹരണം ഈ സന്ദര്‍ശന വേളയില്‍ ദുബായില്‍ നടന്ന ശില്പശാലയില്‍ ഗോപി ആശാന്റെ ശിഷ്യനും ഇവിടെ ദുബായില്‍ ജോലി ഉള്ള കൃഷ്ണന്‍ ഉണ്ണി അവതരിപ്പിച്ച ചൊല്ലിയാട്ടം ഏറെ പ്രശംസ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റി. ചുരുങ്ങിയ സമയത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ ആണ് അദ്ദേഹം അതിനു തയ്യാര്‍ എടുത്തതും അവതരിപ്പിച്ചതും എങ്കിലും ആശാന്റെ ശിക്ഷണത്തില്‍ പഠിച്ച പാഠങ്ങള്‍ കാലങ്ങള്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും മറക്കാതെ നില്‍ക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളില്‍.

RM: താങ്കള്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര്‍ കലനിലയത്തില്‍ എന്ത് ചെയ്യുന്നു? കഥകളിയുടെ ഇന്നത്തെ അവസ്ഥയെ പറ്റിയും കഥകളി പഠനത്തെ പറ്റിയും എന്തെകിലും ?

KG: ഞാന്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര്‍ കലനിലയത്തില്‍ വേഷം വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ തലവന്‍ ആയി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു കഥകളി വിദ്ധ്യാര്‍ത്തി ചുരുങ്ങിയത് രണ്ടു വര്ഷം എങ്കിലും നിരന്തരമായി അഭ്യസ്സിച്ചാല്‍ മാത്രമേ കഥകളി അരങ്ങേറ്റം നടത്താന്‍ പറ്റുകയുള്ളു. മറ്റു കലകള്‍ അങ്ങനെ അല്ല. മുന്‍പ് ഒക്കെ കാലത്ത് മൂന്നു മണിക്ക് എണീറ്റ്‌ കണ്ണ് സാധകവും ഉഴിച്ചിലും ഒക്കെ നിര്‍ബന്ധം ആയിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് പലരും അതൊന്നും ചെയ്യുന്നില്ല. അതെ പോലെ പണ്ട് കളി ഒരു രാത്രി മുഴുവനും ഉള്ള അവതരണ രീതി ആയിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് പോയി പോയി അത് മൂന്നും നാലും മണിക്കൂറിനുള്ളില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങി ഒരു സംഷിപ്ത രൂപം മാത്രമായി ചുരുങ്ങി ഇരിക്കുന്നു. അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ പദവും മേളവും ആട്ടവും വിസ്താരങ്ങള്‍ എല്ലാം തന്നെ വളരെ അധികം ഇല്ലാതായി കഴിഞ്ഞു. കുട്ടികളും മാതാപിതാക്കളും ഏറ്റവും എളുപ്പം പഠിച്ചു എടുത്തു അവതരിപ്പിക്കാവുന്ന വിദ്യകള്‍ പഠിക്കാന്‍ താല്‍പ്പര്യം കാണിക്കുന്നു.Dr. R: ഇന്നത്തെ ഗുരുക്കന്മാരില്‍ ചുരുക്കം ചിലര്‍ മാത്രമേ പഴയ സമ്പ്രദായങ്ങള്‍ തുടര്‍ന്ന് വരുന്നുള്ളൂ. അവരില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ ആണ് ഗോപി ആശാന്‍. കണ്ണ് സാധകവും, ഉഴിചില്ലും എല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് നിര്‍ബന്ധം. കൂടാതെ, സമയം നോക്കാതെ ഉള്ള പഠിപ്പിക്കലും. വെറുതെ അല്ല അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ ശിഷ്യര്‍ എല്ലാവരും കളിയില്‍ പുരോഗതി പ്രാപിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിനോടകം അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ 10 ശിഷ്യര്‍ക്ക് കേന്ദ്ര സ്കോളര്‍ഷിപ്‌ കിട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അത് കിട്ടാന്‍ ഉള്ള എല്ലാ മാര്‍ഗ നിര്‍ദേശങ്ങളും തയ്യാറെടുപ്പുകളും എല്ലാം ആശാന്‍ മുന്നിട് വന്നു ഒപ്പം നിന്ന് ചെയ്തു കൊടുത്തത് കൊണ്ട് അവരെല്ലാം ഇന്ന് ആ സൌഭാഗ്യങ്ങള്‍ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നു.

RM: കഥകളിയില്‍ എന്തെകിലും നൂതനമായ ആവിഷ്കാരങ്ങള്‍ താങ്കളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ?

KG: ഉണ്ണായി വാര്യര്‍ സ്മാരക കലാനിലയത്തിന്റെ നൂതന രീതികളുടെ ഭാഗമായി വന്ദേമാതരം, അഷ്ടപദി എന്നിവ കഥകളി രൂപത്തില്‍ ആക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ, മറ്റു ഭാഷ സാഹിത്യങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് മാക്ബത്ത്, ഹാംലെറ്റ്, മെര്‍ച്ചന്റ് ഓഫ് വെനിസ്സു, എന്നിവയും കഥകളി രൂപത്തിലാക്കി ഇന്ത്യയിലും വിദേശത്തും ഇപ്പോള്‍ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അവയ്ക്ക് എല്ലാം നല്ല സ്വീകരണം ആണ് ലഭിക്കുന്നത്.

RM: താങ്കളുടെ കുടുംബം?

KG: ഭാര്യ ജയശ്രീ, നല്ല ഒരു ഭരതനാട്ട്യം, ഓട്ടംതുള്ളല്‍, കഥകളി നര്‍ത്തകി ആണ്. ഇപ്പോള്‍ ബാങ്കില്‍ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഏക മകള്‍ ഐശ്വര്യാ ഗോപി. ഇപ്പോള്‍ സിവില്‍ എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗ് പഠനത്തിനു ചേര്‍ന്നു. കഥകളിയില്‍ എന്റെ തന്നെ ശിഷ്യ ആണ്. വളര്‍ന്നു വരുന്ന ഒരു കലാകരി എന്ന് പറയാം.

RM: താങ്കളുടെ ആരാധകരോട് എന്തെങ്കിലും പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് പറയാന്‍ ഉണ്ടോ?

KG: കഥകളി എന്ന കല എന്നും നില നില്‍ക്കണം എങ്കില്‍ അതില്‍ ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ താല്‍പര്യവും അതിനോട് പഠിക്കാന്‍ വരുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് അര്‍പ്പണ മനോഭാവവും വേണം. അവരുടെ സന്ഘ്യാ ബലം ഇപ്പോള്‍ കുറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നു. ആ പ്രവണത മാറിയെ തീരു. തിരനോട്ടം ദുബായ്, കല അബുദാബി എന്നീ സങ്കടനകള്‍ ഈ മേഖലയില്‍ സ്ലാഘനീയമായ പ്രവര്‍ത്തികള്‍ ആണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഗള്‍ഫ്‌ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും പുറത്തും ഇങ്ങനെ ഉള്ള പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും തിരനോട്ടം ദുബായിയുടെ ആഭിമുഘ്യത്തില്‍ നടത്തുന്ന കഥകളി ആസ്വാധന അവതരണ പരിപാടികള്‍. . ഇനിയും കഥകളി കലാകാരന്മാര്‍ക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ അവസ്സരം നല്‍കുകയും കഥകളി, കേളി, തായമ്പക എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള കേരളത്തിന്റെ തനതു കലാ രൂപങ്ങള്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ഉള്ള അവസ്സരങ്ങള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ ആയി ലഭ്യമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യണം എന്ന അഭ്യര്‍ത്ഥന ഉണ്ട്.

Maha Shivarathri - the Universal Pati-Patni Day

This year the Mahashivarathri is on 20th February 2012.

Let me repost an old article and a presentation named ShivaSakthi created by me marking the relevance of this day.

These days, we blindly follow several different types of days, for eg: Valentines day, mothers day, fathers day, friendship day, no-smoking day and the list goes on and on. When we look at it Shivarathri is the truly traditional family day or Pati-Patni day, as I term it. Because, from the ancient times, devoted wife's pray and observe fast on this day for the well being of their husband and children and vice-versa, husband's observe religious rituals and prayers like chanting Rudram and chamakam to give grace and prosperity to the well being of own family and the society.

There are many stories associated with Shivaratri and its origins.

One is about lord shiva drinking a poison and he held it in his throat by binding it with a snake. The throat became blue due to the poison (Thus Lord Shiva is also known as Neelakantha) and Shiva remained unharmed. In another story, it is said that the whole world was once facing destruction and the Goddess Parvati worshiped her husband Shiva to save it. Parvati named the night for the worship of Iswara by mortals Maha-Sivaratri, or the great night of Siva. After creation was complete, Parvati asked Shiva of which rituals pleased him the most. The Lord replied that the 14th night of the new moon, during the month of Maagha, is my most favourite day. It is known as Shivaratri. Parvati repeated these words to her friends, from whom the word spread over all creation. Another story is about a hunter. Lubdhaka, a poor tribal man and a devotee of Shiva, once went into the deep forests to collect firewood. At nightfall, he became lost and could not find his way home. In the darkness, Lubdhaka climbed a bel tree, and sought safety and shelter in its branches until dawn. All night, he could hear the growls of tigers and wild animals, and was too frightened to leave the tree. In order to keep himself awake, he plucked one leaf at a time from the tree and then dropped it, while chanting the name of Shiva. By sunrise, he had dropped thousands of leaves on to a Shiva lingam, which he had not seen in the darkness. Lubdhaka's all-night worship pleased Shiva. By the grace of Shiva the tigers and wild animals went away, and Lubdhaka not only survived but was rewarded with 'divine bliss'.

While most Hindu festivals are celebrated during the day, Mahashivratri is celebrated during the night and day that come just before the new moon. Each new moon is dedicated to Shiva, but Mahashivratri is especially important because it is the night when he danced the 'Tandav', his cosmic dance. It also celebrates the wedding of Shiva and Sati, the mother divine. Night represents evil, injustice, ignorance, sin, violence, and misfortune. Tradition says that Shiva, like his symbol the new moon, appeared in order to save the world from darkness and ignorance, before the world entered complete darkness. Those who observe the Mahashivratri fast only break their fast the next morning, and eat the prasad offered to Shiva. Young girls observe the fast and worship Shiva so that he may bless them with good husbands. They sing devotional songs in praise of the lord, and holy texts are chanted throughout the night. The pandits in the temples perform the puja according to the scriptures. This is done four times during the night.

Dedication:

For this auspicious day, I would like to dedicate to our global forum a painting named ShivaSakthi. It is also a dedication to all the loving mother's, wife's and sisters and also to all our fellow brothers for keeping our tradition and values always high, wherever we are.

I would like to also add a few words about this painting.

This is created purely using powerpoint tools and it was done as a result of a few minutes of quite time at a small temple near REC Chathamangalam, Calicut. On that particular monsoon evening (in 1995), it happened to be that there was no power in that area, and the darshan of the deity at the time during deeparadhana created an everlasting memory in my mind. The decoration of the Devi idol, simple and small, by the melshanti (priest) was simply superb. I added to it a similar devotion at another temple, which is Avittathur Mahadeva temple. And the result is this creation – Shivasakthi.

At both these places, the time available by the melshanthi (priest) to decorate the idols during the time the sanctum sanctorum closed for pooja, was barely 10 minutes or so. And imagine yourself the result when the doors are opened. It is the epitomisation of the ultimate sraddha (concentration), the dedication and devotion to provide us a blissful presence.

Can you imagine them practising this art somewhere else? Or re-doing it, if a little more of water has been added to the chandan and kunkum or bhasmam they mix in order to create these decorations.!!

There are many unsung heroes and these are a few among them. And it is also my way of tribute to the many who remain within the four walls of our own religious boundaries, who do not get to watch or listen to any of the niceties which we are blessed with.

No one has the patience these days, and to add ease to it, we have a wonderful creation called remote control. It makes things easy for our wandering minds to switch from one programme to another and to refrain from keeping focussed on one.

We undergo several rigorous rituals and follow procedures for many days and ultimately visit our favourite temples and the moment we are in front of the deity, we close our eyes and fall into deep prayers. At this moment, we go back to the old thoughts, photos etc, forgetting about the opportunity to meet the real lord who is in front of us in full – paadadi kesham. And we are pushed away for someone else to do his minutes or seconds of closed eye prayers. The moment you close your eyes, you forget your objectives.

Open your eyes, look at the realities, and react to it.

As the prayer song "Geet nahi, Sur nahi, phir bhi mem gavoom", in this spiritual sphere of mental peace and inner joy, the responsibility for success or failure is entirely one's own.

Tribute to Dr. V. S. Acharya

Dr V S Acharya passed away on Tuesday, 14th February 2012, morning after a massive heart attack. He was attending a programme in Bangalore at the time, and collapsed on the dais.

Senior BJP leader and Karnataka Higher Education minister VS Acharya collapsed while attending a function and died here today.

Acharya, 71, was soon after rushed to a hospital, officials said. He is survived by wife, four sons and a daughter. He was not keeping well for some time. “He (Acharya) is no more with us”, chief minister Mr DV Sadananda Gowda, said as he rushed to the hospital to pay his last respects.

A member of the Legislative Council, he also held the portfolios of planning and statistics, information technology and biotechnology. A registered medical practitioner, Acharya, born on 6 July, 1940, started his political career in the erstwhile Bharatiya Jana Sangh and was president of Udupi city Municipality from 1968 to 1976. Acharya had served as home minister in the BS Yeddyurappa ministry.

Let's Try and Do It - Making of my little elephant

It is summer holidays time and so let us take advantage of it from within our home. Let us Try and Create a Little Elephant.

It is very easy to create this little elephant following the simple instructions through this picture. What you need is just a combination of circles, boxes, lines and shapes, and fixing it up to get a cute little elephant.

The objective behind this exercise is to underline clearly that each and every participant, irrespective of whether he is an expert or a novice, are treated, guided and nurtured equally here at Team 1 Talent Share.

Secondly, this is a platform for exhibition of Talent and not a competition arena. Therefore, it is a request to children to submit their works, only when they feel, they have done it in complete form with out any rush or hurry. Even if they submit there entry and feel, they could redraw, or retouch it and present it, they could resubmit as a fresh one, so that we could realise the difference, the additions and enjoy the overall aesthetic beauty of each work presented.

This is an instinctive creative platform constantly worked on by me, and how and where the submitted works by you all reach and to what extent is unpredictable. Therefore, utilise this platform with dedication and devotion.

Bring in as many friends who has a creative talent in him or her.

Let their creativity motivate us to present better creative items each time we wish to. Do not hold your thoughts or do not have any inhibitions while you create your works. Accept criticism, if any, with good spirits and understand the mistakes and rectify it the next time you work.

Dubai: Traffic officials have warned parents against driving with infants on their laps, as they are risking their child's life by doing so, engineer Maitha Obaid Bin Udai, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said yesterday.

As many as 13 infants were injured in traffic accidents last year, but the number has dropped considerably as compared to the year before.

Two fatalities

According to traffic accident statistics of 2011, a 35 per cent drop in the number of infants (between the age of 0 to 2) injured in accidents was recorded.

While 20 infants were injured in traffic accidents in 2010, the number dropped to 13 in 2011, she said. Two infant fatalities were recorded in 2010 as well as in 2011.

RTA credited the drop in injuries to a Child Safety Programme, launched at Latifa Hospital and Dubai Hospital in 2009. Over 1,000 mothers are members of the programme.

This is a common scenario. I get to see and keep a controlled silence, because, I wonder, what they think about their own safety, their child's safety, others who are in the car, and on the road at the same time with them. I really do not know. Women are not exemption. Last week, while driving on Shaikh Zayed Road, I watched with awe a woman, with a fully tinted four wheel drive speeding with her child on her lap (between the door and the seat) and even more, talking on the phone. God, save us, and reach us back home safe, that is the only prayer, I have, when I drive each time from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and back.

Plastic money

I had a good friend, who was not responding to my calls for a long time. Earlier, we used to talk daily on all matters. I was able to reach him finally and he talked to me for a few minutes.

He said everything was OK with him, but the tone and reply did not sound so. I wish him well.

Another friend of mine was also missing from regular contacts. I was worried about him, and last week I met him at a function.

He hugged me and apologised for not keeping in touch. I asked him where he was all this time. He replied, “I am a free man now.”

I got more anxious and asked him what happened!

He continued, “I have closed all my credit cards. They were killing me day and night. Somehow, I sold off whatever I could and closed them. Now, I have peace of mind.”

I could feel it from the expression on his face.

Yes, he’s one who could come out of the clutches of plastic money that has destroyed several lives.

I wish others too manage to follow in his footsteps.

The reader advocates mandatory safety procedures, equipment and dress codes for maintenance and cleaning crews whose work constantly requires them to challenge vertical limits

A safety culture is critical

Firms undertaking dangerous jobs have a duty to their workers, and so do the authorities

I see that many old buildings in Abu Dhabi city are being painted these days. While this beautification campaign should be appreciated, I have noticed that some safety elements are being ignored in the process.

Most of the maintenance teams use poor quality suspended cradles and the painters are not properly harnessed and do not wear safety helmets. Even if they do have helmets, they often keep them aside as they probably feel the helmet-shaped plastic caps may not be much help in case of an accident.

Through this community report, I request the supervisors of companies undertaking such jobs to take appropriate measures for the safety of the workers.

I also urge the authorities to implement mandatory safety procedures, equipment and dress codes for all involved in such high-risk jobs. Let us be proactive and think of safety 24/7, rather than acting after an incident happens.

One day recently I noticed a group of children playing football in the empty space between two buildings in Tourist Club area.

There is a transformer there, and they use the wall of it as their goal.

While on my walk, I noticed them practising their shots by shooting at some labourers sitting nearby.

First I thought these were accidents but as I watched I realised they were also pinpointing passers-by at random and at will. Some of the people were hit quite hard.

I continued my walk but, returning, had forgotten this business and became their victim myself. It was painful.

The area has two public parks plus play areas, and these children should be controlled. Could the authorities take appropriate measures?

Children deserve opportunities to play but they should not be developing sadistic skills.

Volvo Ocean Race 2011 – 2012 – Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing wins Leg 3 First Stage and also clinches Etihad Airways In-Port race

Abu Dhabi – 14 Jan 2012

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing clinched this victory by little more than one minute over PUMA in a thrilling finish of the first stage of Leg 3, continuing their winning streak in home waters.

Within two miles of the finish Abu Dhabi skipper British Olympian Ian Walker stole the lead from Team Telefónica, who had held pole position over the fleet from the start of the 106 nautical mile race to Sharjah.

The first Emirati team to ever compete in the race crossed the finish line at 1629 UTC, scoring the maximum six points and boosting their points tally to 31.

PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG netted five points for second place, finishing just one minute and 16 seconds behind Abu Dhabi. Groupama sailing team earned four points for third, Telefónica placed fourth for three and CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand will receive two for fifth.

Winning the sprint capped off a stellar week of racing for the locals, who leave their homeport as heroes having also won the Etihad Airways In-Port Race on Friday.

I have been a regular contributor to this column, but I was forced to take a short break from Short Take due to unavoidable circumstances.

What made me look at the stark realities of communication channels is a vacuum created in my life due to the death of a close relative. I am sure, several of you have experienced it. When someone departs from this world without any warning, a link is broken.

There are several things that we closely communicate with that person, which the moment after, we find no one to refer to. It is a difficult situation indeed and, of course, it will change over a period of time, but with the changes associated and with missing personal touches of that special someone in your life.

The plight of people is well known. Every resident of kadugodi is experiencing the difficulty in crossing the railway line. I have taken up through media.

Its more painful for sick , old people who want to cross the railway track when so many goods trains are parked ( not sure if it is deliberately) just near the drop gates.. I cross the tracks daily and am grieved too , to see the condition of the people... This is absolutely callous behaviour of the authorities.. If they cant construct a walk over bridge , they can at least direct the drivers to park the trains in such a way that it does not bother the citizens more..

The people travelling from/to Kadugodi bus station are facing insurmountable difficulties. Parking of two goods trains across the railway gate, fencing the entry gate from Kadugodi end, digging of drain restricting people crossing over, darkness in the night are putting people to risk of life and property while crossing the railway gate.
Problem is greater for women carrying children, old/handicapped/sick people and those carrying luggage. This needs to be addressed quickly by railways by providing a foot over bridge. After all people live on this side of railway gate while the bus station is placed at the other end which has no habitation at all. Every one will agree that it is impractical for pedestrians to cross over by using the fly over, which has become dangerous even for motorists due to darkness and displaced road dividers.
Secondly, BMTC could be approched to extend the bus routes, more particularly volvos, to this side of railway gate. There are several buildings and residential complexes coming up on this side and hence we could have a collective efforts. The corporator and Legislator/ MP of this area should help us in this regard. Could we build a movement?

സമയം വൈകിട്ട് നാല് മണി ആയി കാണും. ബംഗ്ലൂരിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന കാന്‍സര്‍ ആശുപത്രിയിലെ ഐ സി യു വിനോട് ചേര്‍ന്നുള്ള മുറിയിലെ സോഫയില്‍ ഇരുന്നു മയങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു ഞാന്‍. അടുത്ത് കട്ടിലില്‍ അമ്മ കിടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ബ്ലഡ്‌ പ്രഷര്‍ വളരെ കുറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. ബ്ലഡ്‌ വേണ്ട അളവിലും വളരെ കുറവായിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഈ രണ്ടു കാരണം കൊണ്ടും വായിലെയും തൊണ്ടയിലെയും തൊലിയെല്ലാം പോയി, ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാനും സംസാരിക്കാനും പറ്റാത് അവസ്ഥ.

അവര്‍ മാജിക്‌ മൌത്ത് വാഷ്‌ എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു ഒരു മിക്സ്ചര്‍ കൊണ്ട് തന്നു. ഇത് നന്നായി കുലുക്കുഴിയാന്‍ ഉള്ളതാണ്. അത് കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ അകത്തേക്ക് സേവിക്കാം. എന്തോ ദിവ്യ ഔഷധം കിട്ടിയ പോലെ ഞാന്‍ അത് അമ്മയുടെ വായിലേക്ക് പതുക്കെ ഒഴിച്ച് കൊടുത്തു. വേദന കടിച്ചു പിടിച്ചു, പാവം എന്റെ കൈ മുറുകെ പിടിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് അത് വായില്‍ ഒഴിച്ച് എല്ലാ ഭാഗത്തും നല്ലവണ്ണം കൌക്കൊള്ളി (ഇംഗ്ലീഷില്‍ പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഗാര്‍ഗിള്‍ ചെയ്തു), എന്നിട്ട് നേഴ്സ് പറഞ്ഞ പ്രകാരം അത് ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് വേദന സഹിച്ചു അകത്താക്കി.

കുറച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു മുറിയുടെ വാതില്‍ തുറന്നു കൊണ്ട് ഒരു കൊച്ചു സുന്ദരി കടന്നു വന്നു. അമ്മയും ഞാനും പാതി മയക്കത്തില്‍ ആയിരുന്നു. ശബ്ദം കേട്ട് കണ്ണ് തുറന്നു നോക്കി. ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് അവള്‍ അപ്പുറത്തുള്ള കട്ടിലിലെ രോഗിയുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് പോയി.
ആ മുറിയില്‍ രണ്ടു രോഗികള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അമ്മ വാതിലിനോടു ചേര്‍ന്നുള്ള കട്ടിലിലും  മറ്റേ രോഗി, ജനലിനോട്‌ ചേര്‍ന്നുള്ള കട്ടിലിലും. രണ്ടിനും ഇടയില്‍ ഒരു മറ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത് കൊണ്ട് രണ്ടു പേര്‍ക്കും തമ്മില്‍ കാണാന്‍ പറ്റുമായിരുന്നില്ല.

കുറച്ചു നേരം കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ ആ പെണ്‍കുട്ടി സംസാരിക്കുന്നതു കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. അവര്‍ ഈ അവസ്ഥയില്‍ ഉള്ള കാന്‍സര്‍ രോഗികള്‍ക്ക് ധ്യാനവും മറ്റു ചില ചെറിയ രീതിയില്‍ ഉള്ള ശ്വാസം വലിച്ചു വിടല്‍ അഭ്യാസ്സവും കൂടാതെ അധ്യാത്മിക കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പകര്‍ന്നു കൊടുത്തു രോഗികള്‍ക്ക് ആശ്വാസ്വവും ധൈര്യവും കൊടുക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ആശുപത്രി നിശ്ചയിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു ജോലിക്കാരി ആയിരുന്നു അവര്‍.

പുണ്യ പുരാണങ്ങളിലെ കഥകളും, മറ്റു ധൈന്യംധിന ജീവിതത്തിലെ അനുഭവങ്ങളും കോര്‍ത്തിണക്കി കൊണ്ട് ആ കൊച്ചു പെണ്‍കുട്ടി, വളരെ വ്യക്തമായ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഭാഷയില്‍ അപ്പുറത്തെ കട്ടിലില്‍ കിടക്കുന്ന രോഗിയോട് കഥയായും കാര്യമായും, അവര്‍ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ഈ രോഗവസ്ത്തെ പറ്റിയും അതിനെ അതി ജീവിക്കാന്‍ എന്തൊക്കെ ആത്മീയമായി ചെയ്യണം എന്നും പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുത്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പകുതി മയക്കത്തിലായിരുന്ന ഞങ്ങള്‍ രണ്ടു പേരും അവരുടെ ശൈലി കേട്ട് ജാഗ്രധയോടെ അവര്‍ പറയുന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ഒന്നര മണിക്കൂറോളം അവര്‍ അവിടെ ആ രോഗിയുമായി ചിലവഴിച്ചു. അതിനു ശേഷം അവര്‍ തിരിച്ചു പോയി. പോകുന്ന പോക്കില്‍ അവര്‍ ഞങ്ങളെ രണ്ടു പേരെയും നോക്കി ചിരിച്ചു. വേദനയുന്ടെങ്കിലും അമ്മയും ചിരിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു. ഞാനും തിരിച്ചു അഭിവാദനം ചെയ്തു.

അവര്‍ പോയതിനു ശേഷം കുറച്ചു നേരം ഞങ്ങള്‍ രണ്ടാളും ഒന്നും സംസാരിച്ചില്ല. അതിനു ശേഷം അമ്മ വളരെ പണിപെട്ട് പറഞ്ഞു. മോനെ എനിക്ക് വേണ്ടിയും അവരോടു ഒന്ന് നാളെ മുതല്‍ വരാന്‍ പറയുമോ. അവര്‍ പറയുന്ന പോലെ ഒക്കെ ചെയ്‌താല്‍ എനിക്കും ആശ്വാസം കിട്ടിയാലോ.
കുറച്ചു കാലമായി കാന്‍സര്‍ രോഗവുമായി പടപൊരുതി നടക്കുന്ന അമ്മക്ക് ഇങ്ങനെ ഉള്ള കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഒട്ടും താല്പര്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. അമ്മയുടെ ആഗ്രഹം കേട്ട ഞാന്‍ മനസ്സാ സന്തോഷിച്ചു. ഈശ്വരാ, നല്ലത് മാത്രം വരുത്തണേ.

ഉടനെ തന്നെ അവരുടെ ഓഫീസില്‍ ഞാന്‍ പോയി പിറ്റേ ദിവസ്സം തൊട്ടു അമ്മയ്ക്കും അവരുടെ ക്ലാസ്സ്‌ ഏര്‍പാടാക്കി. മനസ്സ് കൊണ്ട് ഞാന്‍ സന്തോഷിച്ചു. ഈശ്വരാ, ഇന്ന് അമ്മയുടെ പിറന്നാള്‍ ആണല്ലോ, അമ്മ കുറച്ചു ഊണ് കഴിച്ചു, സാമ്പാറും തൈരും കൂട്ടി, ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഇതാ, ഇങ്ങനെ ഉള്ള കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യാന്‍ മനസ്സ് കൊണ്ട് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു.. ഏതു രോഗിക്കും വേണ്ടത് ജീവിക്കണം എന്നാ ആഗ്രഹമാണ്. അമ്മയുടെ മനസ്സില്‍ അതുണ്ടല്ലോ, ഞാന്‍ സന്തോഷിച്ചു.

ആ പെണ്‍കുട്ടി പോയതും, മഴ തുരു തുരെ പെയ്യാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി.. ജനലരികില്‍ അല്ലാത്തത്  കൊണ്ട്, ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മഴയുടെ ശബ്ദം മാത്രമേ കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ പറ്റുന്നുള്ളൂ. അമ്മ ആ റൂമില്‍ വന്നിട്ട് നാല് ദിവസ്സമായി. മൂന്ന് രോഗികള്‍ അതിനകം അവിടെ അടുത്ത കട്ടിലില്‍ വന്നു പോയി. ഇതിനകം ഞങ്ങളോട് പരിചയപ്പെട്ട ആ കട്ടിലിലെ രോഗി രണ്ടു കട്ടിലിനിടയില്‍ ഒരു മറയുന്ടെങ്കിലും അമ്മയോട് വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു. " മാ ജി, ഭാരിഷ് ഭാഹാര്‍ ജ്യാധ ഹേ' ഓഫ്‌ എ സി കമത്തി കരൂം ?" മഴ പുറമേ നന്നായി പെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്, എ സി ഓഫ്‌ ചെയ്യണോ എന്ന് അവര്‍ അമ്മയോട് ചോദിച്ചു. കാരണം, അവര്‍ക്ക് കീമോ തെറാപ്പി നടക്കുന്ന സമയം ആണ്. അപ്പോള്‍ ചൂട് കൂടുതല്‍ തോന്നിക്കുന്ന അവസ്ഥ. അമ്മക്കാണ് എങ്കില്‍ ബ്ലഡ്‌ കുറഞ്ഞു ആകെ ക്ഷീണിതയായ അവസ്ഥയും. ആ കട്ടിലിലെ രോഗി ഒരു ഡോക്ടര്‍ ആയിരുന്നു. അവര്‍ക്കറിയാമായിരുന്നു അമ്മയുടെ അവസ്ഥ, അത് കൊണ്ട് സ്നേഹപൂര്‍വ്വം ചോദിച്ചു. അമ്മയും തിരിച്ചു അവരുടെ അവസ്ഥ, ആ സമയത്ത് ചൂട് കൂടുതല്‍ തോന്നിക്കും എന്ന് അറിയാവുന്നത് കൊണ്ട്, അമ്മ കൈ കൊണ്ട് ആണ്ഗ്യം കാട്ടി, എ സി കുറക്കേണ്ട എന്ന്. ഞാന്‍ അവരോടു പറയുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ഒരു മണിക്കൂര്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു കാണും, അവരുടെ മരുന്ന് കയറ്റല്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു, അവരുടെ വിശ്രമവും കഴിഞ്ഞു അവര്‍ പോയി. ഞാനും അമ്മയും മാത്രമായി ആവിടെ ആ മുറിയില്‍. ഒരു തരം മൂകമായ അവസ്ഥ. അങ്ങനെ പറ്റില്ലല്ലോ എന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചു ഞാന്‍ ടീവി ഓണ്‍ ചെയ്തു. പല ചാനലുകളും മാറി മാറി അവസാനം, ശ്രീ ശങ്കര ചാനല്‍ എത്തി. അതില്‍ ആ സമയത്ത്, ഒരു അധ്യാപകന്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് ഹനുമാന്‍ ചാലിസ്സ പഠിപ്പിച്ചു കൊടുക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

അത് കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ അമ്മ എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു, "മോനെ എന്നെ ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് ഒന്ന് വേറെ ഏതെങ്കിലും ആശുപത്രിയിലേക്ക് മാറ്റമോ". അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ നമ്മള്‍ക്ക് വീട്ടിലേക്കു  പോയാലോ?. ഇങ്ങനെ കിടക്കാന്‍ എനിക്ക് വയ്യ". ഞാന്‍ നിശബ്ദനായി കുറച്ചു നേരം ഇരുന്നു. അമ്മയുടെ ആ അവസ്ഥയില്‍ എന്ത് മറുപടി പറയണം എന്നറിയാതെ മനസ്സ് വിങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു. കുറച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ അമ്മ തന്നെ വീണ്ടും പറഞ്ഞു.. "അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ നാളെ നമുക്ക് ജനലിനരികില്‍ ഉള്ള ആ കട്ടിലിലേക്ക് മാറ്റാന്‍ പറയാം. അവിടെ വരുന്നവര്‍ എല്ലാം തന്നെ അസുഖം കുറഞ്ഞു വീട്ടിലേക്കു പെട്ടെന്ന് പോകുന്നു. പുറത്തെ കാറ്റും മഴയും കാണുകയും ചെയ്യാം". ഞാന്‍ പതുക്കെ നെറ്റിയില്‍ തടവി കൊണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു.. അമ്മാ, നമ്മുക്ക് നാളെ ഡോക്ടര്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍ പറയാം. ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് പോകണം എന്ന്. ഞാന്‍ വീട്ടില്‍ കൊണ്ട് പോകാം അമ്മയെ. അത് പറയുമ്പോഴേക്കും അമ്മയുടെ ശ്വാസം വലിക്കുന്ന രീതിയില്‍ വ്യത്യാസം കണ്ടു തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. ഇല്ല ഒന്നും സംഭവിക്കില്ല, ഞാന്‍ എനിക്ക് തന്നെ ധൈര്യം കൊടുത്ത് കൊണ്ട്, അമ്മയെ ആശ്വസിപ്പിച്ചു, നെറ്റിയിലും കാലിന്മേലും തടവിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

അപ്പോഴേക്കും അവരുടെ ഉള്ളില്‍ മാജിക്‌ മൌത്ത് വാഷ്‌ ഫലം ചെയ്യാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. അമ്മ പതുക്കെ മയങ്ങാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. പിന്നെയാണ് ഞാന്‍ അറിഞ്ഞത്, അതില്‍ മയങ്ങാന്‍ ഉള്ള മരുന്നും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്ന്. മയങ്ങുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് എന്തൊക്കെയോ പറയണം എന്നാഗ്രഹിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി, പക്ഷെ കണ്ണുകള്‍ താനേ അടഞ്ഞു പോയി. ഏകദേശം ഒരു മണിക്കൂര്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴേക്കും, അമ്മയുടെ ശ്വാസ്സഗതിയില്‍ മാറ്റം കണ്ട ഞാന്‍ ഉടനെ ഡോക്ടറെ വിളിച്ചു വരുത്തി..അവര്‍ക്ക് കാര്യം മനസ്സിലായി. അമ്മയെ ഐ സി യു വിനകത്തെക്ക് മാറ്റണം. ഇനി ഈ മുറിയില്‍ പറ്റില്ല, ഒരു ഡോക്ടറുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം ഇപ്പോഴും അമ്മക്ക് വേണം. അദ്ദേഹം കല്പിച്ചു. ശരി, ഞാനും, സമ്മതിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ അമ്മയെ ആ മുറിയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഐ സി യുവിലേക്കു കൊണ്ട് പോകാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ആശുപത്രി ജീവനക്കാര്‍ വന്നു. അപ്പോഴേക്കും, ടീവിയില്‍ ആ അധ്യാപകന്‍ അന്നത്തെ പാഠം ചൊല്ലി കൊടുക്കല്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു, ആ കുട്ടികളെ കൊണ്ട് ഹനുമാന്‍ ചാലിസ്സ ചൊല്ലിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. എന്തോ, ആ അബോധാവസ്ഥയിലും അമ്മയ്ക്ക് കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ പറ്റിയിരുന്നോ അത് എന്നറിയില്ല, അതോ ബോധം പോകുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പ് കേട്ട ഭാഗം, മനസ്സില്‍ ഉണര്‍ന്നു വന്നിട്ടോ എന്നറിയില്ല, അമ്മ കൈ കൊണ്ട് പതുക്കെ തുടയില്‍ താളം പിടിക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടു. ഈശ്വരാ കൈ വിടരുതേ, ഞാന്‍ ഉള്ളുരുകി പ്രാര്‍ഥിച്ചു.

ആ പോയ അമ്മ, പിന്നെ ഓരോ നിമിഷവും മരണത്തിലേക്ക് അത്യധികം വേഗതയോടെ നീങ്ങി കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. കഷ്ടം, എന്ത് കൊണ്ടോ ആ ആശുപത്രിയിലെ ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പാഴ് മോഹം തന്നു കൊണ്ട്, അത് ചെയ്‌താല്‍, ശരിയാവും ഇത് ചെയ്‌താല്‍ ശരിയാവും, ഇന്ന് ഇത്ര ബ്ലഡ്‌ കൊടുക്കണം, ഇന്ന് ഡയാലിസിസ് ചെയ്യ്താല്‍ കുറയും എന്നൊക്കെ പറഞ്ഞു, അതൊക്കെ തുടര്‍ന്നുള്ള രണ്ടു ദിവസ്സം ഞങ്ങളെ കൊണ്ട് ചെയ്യിപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. രണ്ടാം ദിവസ്സം ഐ സി യു വില്‍ കടന്നു കണ്ട അമ്മയുടെ അവസ്ഥ കണ്ട ഉടനെ ഞാന്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കി അമ്മ ഞങ്ങളെ വിട്ടു ഇതിനകം തന്നെ പോയ അവസ്ഥയില്‍ ആയിരുന്നു എന്ന്. ഇനി അവിടെ അങ്ങനെ വെന്റിലെട്ടര്‍ മുഖേന അവരുടെ ജീവന്‍ നില നിറുത്തുന്നത് അവരോടു തന്നെ ഉള്ള ക്രൂരതയാവും എന്നെനിക്കു തോന്നി...

ഈശ്വരാ എങ്ങനെ പറയും ഇനി ഒന്നും ചെയ്യേണ്ടാ എന്ന്. ഭാഗ്യം, അമ്മയുടെ, ഒരു ശിഷ്യ, ആ സമയം അമ്മ ഹോസ്പിറ്റലില്‍ ആണെന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് അവരെ കാണാന്‍ വന്നു. മറ്റൊരു ആശുപത്രിയിലെ എമര്‍ജന്‍സി വിഭാഗം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ഡോക്ടര്‍ ആയിരുന്നു അവര്‍. അമ്മയെ കണ്ടതും  അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ഇനി ഒന്ന് ചെയ്യാന്‍ സമ്മതിക്കരുത് , അവരെ ക്രൂശിക്കലയിരിക്കും  അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്‌താല്‍. അത് കൂടി കേട്ടപ്പോള്‍, ധൈര്യം സംഘടിപ്പിച്ചു ആ ആശുപത്രിയിലെ ഡോക്ടര്‍മാരോട് പറഞ്ഞു വേണ്ട, അമ്മ മരിച്ചോട്ടെ, ദയവായി ഇങ്ങനെ ക്രൂശിക്കരുതെ അവരെ, പൈസക്ക് വേണ്ടി... നിവൃത്തിയില്ലാതെ അവര്‍ അമ്മയെ വെന്റിലടരില്‍ നിന്ന് പിറ്റേ ദിവസ്സം കാലത്ത് മാറ്റി. അതി വേഗതയില്‍ ചലിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന വാഹനം, ഒരു കുന്നു ഇറങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍, സ്വിച്ച് ഓഫ്‌ ചെയ്തു വിടുമ്പോള്‍ സ്പീഡ് കുറയുന്നത് പോലെ, അമ്മയുടെ ബ്ലഡ്‌ പ്രഷര്‍, ആ വെന്റിലെട്ടര്‍ ഓഫ്‌ ചെയ്തത് മുതല്‍, കുറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. നൂറു, എന്പതു...എഴുപതു... അറുപതു ........

അമ്മയുടെ അടുത്ത് തന്നെ ഇരുന്നു കൊണ്ട്,   എല്ലാ ഈശ്വരന്മാരെയും ഗുരുക്കന്മാരേയും മനസ്സില്‍ വിചാരിച്ചു ലളിതാ സഹസ്ര നാമം, പതുക്കെ പതുക്കെ കാതില്‍ ചൊല്ലി കൊടുത്തു കൊണ്ടിരിന്നു. അബോധാവസ്ഥയില്‍ ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിലും, ഇടയ്ക്കിടയ്ക്ക് എന്റെ കര സ്പര്‍ശം മനസ്സിലായിട്ടോ എന്തോ അമ്മ സൂചനകള്‍ തന്നു കൊണ്ടിരിന്നു.

എന്തൊക്കെയോ പറയാനും ചെയ്യാനും ഭാക്കി വച്ച് കൊണ്ട് ആ അമ്മ ഞങ്ങളെ ഈ ലോകത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് അന്ന് രാത്രിയോടെ വിട പറഞ്ഞു ഈ ലോകത്തിലെ അവരുടെ കര്‍മ യോഗങ്ങള്‍ മുഴുവനാക്കി അവരുടെ ശരീരം ഞങ്ങളെ വിട്ടു പോയി.

എങ്കിലും അവരുടെ ആത്മാവ് ഞങ്ങളോടടൊപ്പം ഇന്നും എന്നും ഉണ്ടാവും. ആ ജനലിലൂടെ, ഞങ്ങള്‍ ശബ്ദം മാത്രം കേട്ട് ആസ്വദിച്ച ആ മഴയും, മയക്കത്തിലെങ്കിലും കേട്ട് തലം പിടിച്ചു രസിച്ച ആ നാമ സന്കീര്തനവും എന്നെന്നും അവസാന ശ്വാസം വരെ നില നില്‍ക്കും.

പല ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഭാക്കിയായത് മാത്രം മിച്ചം. എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് ആ ആശുപത്രിയിലെ ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ അമ്മയുടെ രോഗാവസ്ഥയുടെ യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യം മനസ്സിലായിട്ടു പോലും രണ്ടാമതും ഒരു കീമോ ചികില്സ്സക്ക് അവര്‍ക്ക് കൊടുത്തൂ? എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് അവരുടെ എല്ലാ പ്രധാന അവയങ്ങള്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം നിറുത്തി എന്നറിഞ്ഞിട്ടും അവരെ ആ ഐ സി യു വില്‍ വെന്റിലെട്ടരില്‍ കിടത്തി? അങ്ങനെ പോകുന്നു...

ഒരു ഫ്രഞ്ച് സുന്ദരിയുടെ ഒളിച്ചോട്ടം

കാലത്ത് ഏഴു മണിയെ ആയിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നുല്ല്. മൊബൈല്‍ തുരുതുരാ
അടിക്കുന്നു. കാലത്ത്, കുളിയും തൊഴലും ഒക്കെ കഴിഞ്ഞു, തിരക്ക്
പിടിച്ചുള്ള ഒരുക്കത്തിനിടയില്‍ ഫോണ്‍ ശബ്ദം ആദ്യം ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍
പെട്ടില്ല. ഓടി ചെന്ന് എടുത്തു നോക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ മൂന്നു തവണ മുന്‍പേ
വിളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഓഫീസിലെ ഉയര്‍ന്ന ഉധ്യോഗസ്ഥന്‍ ആണ്
വിളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. തിരിച്ചു വിളിക്കാതെ രക്ഷയില്ല. ഒരു ശുഭ ദിനം
ആശംസിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി. തിരിച്ചു ആശംസകള്‍ നേര്‍ന്നു കൊണ്ട് ചോദിച്ചു, എവിടെ
ആയിരുന്നു, എന്ത് പറ്റി സാധാരണ പോലെ ഫോണ്‍ ഉടനെ എടുത്തില്ലല്ലോ. കുളിയും
ജപവും ഒക്കെ ആയിരുന്നു. ഫോണ്‍ അടിക്കുന്നത് കേട്ടില്ല സര്‍. ശരി, അദ്ദേഹം
തുടര്‍ന്നു, ഞാന്‍ ഒരു പ്രശ്നത്തില്‍ ആണ് , ഇന്നലെ രാത്രി മുതല്‍
മിരബെല്ലിനെ കാണാനില്ല. അവള്‍ ഒരു കൊച്ചു പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയാണ്. ഞങ്ങള്‍
എല്ലായിടത്തും തിരക്കി. ഒരു സൂചനയും ഇല്ല. രാത്രി ഭക്ഷണം കഴിഞ്ഞു പുറത്തു
നടക്കാന്‍ ഇറങ്ങിയതാണ്.. ഇനി എന്താ ചെയ്യുക... പോലീസില്‍ പരാധി
കൊടുക്കാന്‍ എന്താണ് വഴികള്‍. മറ്റു മാര്‍ഗം വല്ലതും ഉണ്ടോ കണ്ടു
പിടിക്കാന്‍...

ഈശ്വരാ ഞാന്‍ ഉള്ളില്‍ വിളിച്ചു, ഇന്നത്തെ ദിവസ്സം ഓട്ടം തന്നെ. എവിടെ
പോയി കണ്ടു പിടിക്കും ആ കൊച്ചു സുന്ദരിയെ, ആരെങ്കിലും പിടിച്ചു കൊണ്ട്
പോയോ, അതോ ആരുടെയെങ്കിലും കൂടെ ഒളിച്ചു ഓടിയോ? ഞാന്‍ ഇതാ സാറിന്റെ
വീട്ടില്‍ എത്തി, ബാക്കിയെല്ലാം അവിടെ വന്നിട്ട്.

വേഗം തന്നെ ഷര്‍ട്ടും പാന്റും ടയ്യും ഒക്കെ കുത്തിക്കേറ്റി, പ്രാതലും
കഴിച്ചു എന്ന് വരുത്തി ഓടി. ഒരു വലിയ വില്ലയാണ് എന്റെ എമാന്റെത്.
അതിനടുതുള്ളതും അതെ പോലെ തന്നെ ഉള്ളവ. ചില്ലറക്കാരല്ല അവിടെ താമസം.
പുള്ളി ജോലി മാറി ഇവിടെ വന്നപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ കൊച്ചു സുന്ദരിയും കൂടെ
ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മകനെക്കാള്‍ സ്നേഹം അവളോടായിരുന്നു അദേഹത്തിന്. മകനും
അവള്‍ ഒഴിച്ച് കൂടാന്‍ വയ്യാത്ത കളിക്കൂട്ടുക്കാരി. ആ നടത്തവും ഭാവവും
കണ്ടാല്‍, ആരും ഒന്ന് നോക്കി നിന്ന് പോകും. നോക്കി നോക്കിയില്ല എന്നുള്ള
ആ നോട്ടം കണ്ടാല്‍ തന്നെ ആരും വീണു പോകും.

ഇനി എന്താ ചെയ്യാ, ഈശ്വരാ. കൊല്ലം അവസാനം സമയം ആണ്. എല്ലാ ഗവണ്മെന്റ്
വകുപ്പില്‍ ഉള്ളവരും ലീവില്‍. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കാര്യം വീഴ്ച വരുത്തിയാല്‍
ഈ കൊല്ലം ചെയ്ത പണിയെല്ലാം തഥൈവ. ശമ്പളവും ജോലി ഉയര്‍ച്ചയും ഒക്കെ
സംസാരിപ്പിച്ചു ഉറപ്പിക്കുന്ന അപ്പ്രയ്സ്സല്‍ സമയം ആണ്. ഈശ്വരന്മാരെ
കത്ത് രക്ഷിക്കണേ. കുഞ്ഞു കുട്ടി പരാധീനങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുപാട് ഉള്ളതാണ്. സകല
ദൈവങ്ങളെയും വിളിച്ചു പ്രാര്‍ഥിച്ചു.

തലേന്ന് ക്രിസ്മസ് പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥന ഉള്ളതിനാല്‍ രാത്രി റോഡില്‍ ധാരാളം
ആളുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടാവേണ്ടതാണ്. അപ്പോള്‍ ആരെങ്കിലും കണ്ടിരിക്കാം. ഏതെങ്കിലും
കുരുത്തം കേട്ടവര്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും ചെയ്തോ? അങ്ങനെ പോയി ഭയവും സംശയങ്ങളും.

ആ വലിയ വീടിനുള്ളില്‍ ഒന്ന് കറങ്ങി. അവ അവളുടെ മുറിയില്‍ കയറി നോക്കി.
കിടക്കയെല്ലാം വിരിച്ച അതെ മാതിരി കിടക്കുന്നു. ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
രാത്രിയില്‍ പാല്‍ കുടിക്കാറുണ്ട്. അതും മുടക്കിയിട്ടില്ല. എന്ത് പറ്റി,
ആരുടെ കൂടെ പോയി, ഇനി ആരെങ്കിലും പറഞ്ഞു പറ്റിച്ചു പുറത്തു കൊണ്ട് പോയോ
ഈശ്വരാ..

വീടിനു വെളിയില്‍ കടന്നു. അവിടെ പരിസ്സരം എല്ലാം ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ നോക്കി.
ചുമരില്‍ പാടുകള്‍ ഒന്നും ഇല്ല. പൂന്തോട്ടത്തിലെ ചെടികളും അതെ പോലെ,
പിടിവലിയൊ മറ്റു ലക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ ഒന്നും തന്നെ ഇല്ല. പുറത്തു ഉള്ള വീടുകളിലും
പരിസ്സരത്തും അന്വേഷിച്ചു. അവര്‍ക്കും ഒരു വിവരവും ഇല്ല. ഫോട്ടോ
കാണിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ അവരും പറഞ്ഞു, ഈ സുന്ദരിയെ ഞങ്ങളും ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
കഷ്ടം അപകടം ഒന്നും ഇല്ലാതിരിക്കട്ടെ. അപ്പോള്‍ ആ വഴികളും അടഞ്ഞു.

സമയം വൈകിച്ചിട്ടു കാര്യമില്ല. ഞങ്ങള്‍ അവളുടെ ഒരു ഫോട്ടോയും
പാസ്സ്പോര്‍ട്ട് , വിസ എന്നിവയുടെ കോപ്പിയും കൊണ്ട് അടുത്ത പോലീസ്സ്
സ്റ്റേഷന്‍ ലക്ഷ്യമാക്കി നീങ്ങി. പോകുന്ന വഴിയില്‍ സിഗ്നലില്‍ വണ്ടി
നിറുത്തുമ്പോള്‍ എല്ലാ ഭാഗത്തേക്കും രണ്ടു പേരും കണ്ണുകള്‍ ഓടിച്ചു.
എവിടെയെങ്കിലും കാണാന്‍ സാധിച്ചാലോ.

അവിടെ ചെന്ന് കാര്യം പറഞ്ഞു. സാര്‍ ഇന്നലെ രാത്രി പത്തു മണി മുതല്‍
മിരബെല്ലിനെ കാണാന്‍ ഇല്ല. അവിടെ ഇരുന്ന ഓഫിസ്സര്‍ വാച്ച് നോക്കി
ഞങ്ങളോട് ചോദിച്ചു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ സമയം എത്രയായി. ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഒരേ സ്വരത്തില്‍
പറഞ്ഞു. പതിനൊന്നു മണി. ഇതാണോ നിങ്ങളുടെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്ത്വം. അതെ സമയം തന്നെ
ഞങ്ങളെ എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് വിളിച്ചു വിവരം പറഞ്ഞില്ല. എവിടെ ഫോട്ടോ? എവിടെ
മറ്റു കടലാസ്സുകള്‍? ആരെയെങ്കിലും നിങ്ങള്ക്ക് സംശയം ഉണ്ടോ? എന്താണ്
അവളുടെ രീതികള്‍? ഇതിനു മുന്‍പും ഇങ്ങനെ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടോ? ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍
ശരം കണക്കു അയാള്‍ അറബി കലര്‍ന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷില്‍ തൊടുത്തു വിട്ടു
കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന. തത്തമ്മ പറയുന്ന പോലെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ മറുപടിയും കൊടുത്ത്.
കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറില്‍ അറബിയില്‍ എന്തൊക്കെയോ എഴുതി ചേര്‍ത്തു അയാള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.
ഞങ്ങള്‍ അന്വേഷ്വിക്കം, നിങ്ങളും നോക്കൂ. വിഷമിക്കേണ്ട. അവളെ തിരിച്ചു
കിട്ടും. ഈ നാട്ടില്‍ കുറ്റം ചെയ്യാന്‍ ധൈര്യം ഉള്ളവര്‍ കുറവാണ്. ഇത്
എന്തെങ്കിലും അബദ്ധം പറ്റി എവിടെയെങ്കിലും ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടു പോയിട്ടുണ്ടാവാം.
നിങ്ങള്‍ രണ്ടു പേരും ഫോണില്‍ എപ്പോള്‍ വിളിച്ചാലും കിട്ടാവുന്ന
രീതിയില്‍ ഇരിക്കണം. എന്തെങ്കിലും വിവരം കിട്ടിയാല്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഉടനെ
വിളിക്കാം. ഇപ്പോള്‍ പൊയ്ക്കോളൂ.

ക്രിസ്മസ് ആയിരുന്നു അന്ന്. ഈ ഒളിച്ചോട്ടം കാരണം തലേ ദിവസ്സം തൊട്ടു
ഉറക്കമില്ലാതെ സായ്പ്പും മകനും ഭാര്യയും വേവലാതി കൊണ്ട് കണ്ണ് ചീര്‍ത്തു
വല്ലതായിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒന്ന് കൊണ്ടും പേടിക്കേണ്ട, എന്തായാലും അവളെ
നമുക്ക് തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടും, വേറെയും മാര്‍ഗങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടല്ലോ പോലിസ്സല്ലാതെ,
അവയിലൂടെയും നമുക്ക് പരിശ്രമിക്കാം, എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞെ അവരെ ആശ്വസിപ്പിച്ചു.
ഉടനെ തന്നെ ഫേസ്ബുക്കിലും മറ്റു മാധ്യമങ്ങളിലും അവളുടെ ഫോട്ടോ സഹിതം
കാണാതായ വിവരം പരസ്യമായി കൊടുത്തു.

വൈകുന്നേരം വരെയും ഒരു വിവരവും ഇല്ല. രാത്രിയായി, ക്രിസ്മസ് രാവും
കഴിഞ്ഞു ഒരു രാത്രി കൂടി അങ്ങനെ കടന്നു പോയി....ഉറക്കമില്ലാതെ. എല്ലാ
ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും തിരച്ചിലും മറ്റു ശ്രമങ്ങളും വിഫ്ഫലമാക്കി കൊണ്ട്.

കാലത്ത് ഒരു എട്ടു മണി ആയി കാണും, അവളെ കാണാതായിട്ട് ഒരു ദിവസ്സം
കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. അതാ ഗേറ്റില്‍ ഒരു അനക്കം. പകുതി തുറന്നിട്ട
വാതിലിലൂടെ അതാ അവള്‍ മന്ദം മന്ദം നടന്നു വരുന്നു. വലത്ത് കാലിനു ഒരു
വലിവുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ഒരു സംശയം... അവിടെ അവിടെ ചോര പോടിയുന്നുമുണ്ട്...
സായ്പ്പിന്റെ മകന്‍ ഓടി ചെന്ന് അവളെ കോരി എടുത്തു ഉമ്മ വച്ച്.... കണ്ണ്
നീര്‍ പൊഴിച്ച് കൊണ്ട് ചോദിച്ചു നീ എവിടെ ആയിരുന്നു. അപ്പോഴേക്കും
സായിപ്പും മദാമയും ഓടി എത്തി. അവരും അവളെ മാറി മാറി എടുത്തു ഉമ്മ
വച്ച്.... സാരമില്ല മോനെ നമുക്ക് അവളെ ജീവനോടെ തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടിയല്ലോ...
സന്തോഷം കൊണ്ട് അവര്‍ക്ക് മൂന്ന് പേര്‍ക്കും കൂടുതല്‍ ഒന്നും
സംസാരിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.

ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഭാക്കി വച്ച് കൊണ്ട് അവളെ അവര്‍ അവളുടെ മുറിയിലെ കിടക്കയില്‍
കൊണ്ട് കിടത്തി പതുക്കെ തലോടി, പാല്‍ കൊടുത്തു..

മ്യാവു...മ്യാവു. അവളും എന്തോ ഒക്കെ പറയാന്‍ വേണ്ടി
ശ്രമിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ക്ഷീണം കൊണ്ടോ യാത്ര ചെയ്തതു കൊണ്ടോ
എന്തെന്നറിയില്ല അവള്‍ വേഗം ഉറങ്ങി പോയി.

മിരബെല്‍, നാല് വയസ്സുള്ള ആ സുന്ദരി പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍ പൂച്ച, ഏതൊരാളും
കണ്ടാല്‍ ഒന്ന് നോക്കി നിന്ന് പോകും അവളെ. നിഗൂഡതകള്‍ ഭാക്കി വച്ച്
കൊണ്ട്, അവള്‍ സുഖ നിദ്രയില്‍ അതാ കിടക്കുന്നു. എന്തൊരു ഭാഗ്യ ജന്മം.
അവള്‍ ഈ നാല് വയസ്സിനിടയില്‍ ഏഴു കടലും കടന്നു കാണാത്ത രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ വളരെ
കുറവ്. സായ്പ്പ് എവിടെ ഒക്കെ പോകുന്നോ അവിടെ അവളും ഉണ്ടാവും..
ആരായിരിക്കാം അവളുടെ പുതിയ കാമുകന്‍, അതോ ആരാണ് അവളെ തട്ടി കൊണ്ട് പോയി
പീഡിപ്പിച്ചത്. ഈ രാജ്യത്തു പീഡന ശ്രമം വളരെ ഗൗരവമുള്ള കുറ്റമാണെന്ന്
അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടു പോലും അത് ചെയ്ത അവന്‍ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അവര്‍ ഇനിയും അവളെ
ഉപദ്രവിക്കാതെ നോക്കണം എന്ന് തമാശയോടെ എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് സായ്പ്പ്
നന്ദിയോടെ എന്റെ മുഖത്ത് നോക്കി ചിരിച്ചു. ഈശ്വരാ അങ്ങനെയും ഒരു ജന്മം
അങ്ങനെയും ഒരു ദിവസ്സം. എന്തായാലും പുള്ളിക്കാരന് അവളെ കിട്ടിയല്ലോ എന്നാ
ആശ്വാസ്സത്തോടെ ഞാന്‍ തിരിച്ചു വീട്ടിലേക്കു യാത്രയായി. ആശാന്‍
സന്തോഷിച്ചാല്‍ മാത്രമേ നമ്മുടെ കാര്യം കുശാല്‍ ആവുള്ളു.

Abu Dhabi city view from Abu Dhabi Mall. It is extremely beautiful to view the city from the height of Abu Dhab Mall Business Towers. One gets to watch the busy life as it happens. However, in this picture, you will see the silence of the city on a Friday morning. It is more, especially being holiday season and most of the expats are on leave abroad or out of Abu Dhabi with friends and family.

It's time to warm up. Being an enthusiast of percussion instruments and playing them whenever I get an opportunity, I have a few different types of taditional Indian Ghanjira's. As they are made of animal skin, they have to be made warm before playing to get the right notes and sound modulations. It was for the first time, I am seeing an electric heater being used to tune a similar set of percussion instruments (Tambourines) by a local arabic performers before their performance at Abu Dhabi mall.

Chances to serve in different ways

This is the photo of a foreign Sanyasini, who has devoted her life to do seva at Sai Ashram at Vrindavan, opposite to my apartment complex. Apart from doing voluntary service, she sits on the pavement every evening to do biksha to collect some money to meet her day to day living needs. If one gives or try to give a large sum, she normally refuses and takes coins only as her needs are limited.

We were looking for distributing our beloved Ammas dresses to someone needy. And just the other day, this sanyasinis whole dress materials and bags were stolen and she was asking for help with those around. Our contact, the vendors in front of the ashram informed us about this sad and cruel incident, and what to say, a very relevant opportunity to be at service for her.

My loving wife have contacted her and done all the assistance she needs at this moment of desperation and urgency, in terms of dress and other needs.

God, you are ominipresent, and we are at your service.... You know, we are ready, ever ready, and line up opportunities one after another, and my mind says, there is one big event waiting for to happen..... More about it later.

e Nidhi SREE Nidhi - Christmas and New Year Gifts getting ready for children

It's Friday, and time to open the cloth packets I received from my friends and colleagues to be gifted to the children of e Nidhi SREE Nidhi Programme. I am thrilled, excellent materials; some of them included even brand new clothes and intellectual toys too for complementing my efforts. Tears rolled when I saw those new ones. A friend has offered as many ream of new clothes for their uniforms. God, you have been merciful and kind to support our thoughts and initiatives. My duty is simple now, to iron them once more, roll them neatly and include them in the large box.

Some more gift parcels, including toys are awaited during the coming days. Two more efforts are underway for them and as and when it is achieved, I will share it with you all.

Repeat my call, if you have any good quality, used clothes for children aged 4 to 18 years, white dresses for BOYS, do share them with me quickly so that I can include your gift in my New Year parcel for those blessed children. If you have good quality drawing books, pencils, and tools for crafts, please include them too. There are some talented children in them who may love receiving them.

Story across the Window

Many of us have read several times an email about a patient narrating a storing from a hospital bed. It was one of the most popular email forwards with a proving thought.

The one I am writing is from my real life experience. The window you see is from a twin sharing ICU support room situated in one of the leading cancer hospitals in Bangalore. My mother in law was in the last stage of her life and was admitted to this room. We were in the first bed which was next to the entrance and there was another bed, which was close to the window outside.

During the last week of her life in this world, she was here. As by standers, me and my wife was also there with her. She was conscious and in the adjacent bed, patients came and went. Most of them returned back to their home from there.

During the course of the day, we made friendship with them, their relatives as we discussed each others conditions. Amma was in conscious state and was able to see people coming and going. All Cancer Patients in various conditions.

On the 2^nd day, there came a new patient, a Lt Colonel’s wife, and a Doctor by Profession. Her husband Lt Colonel Ray was with her and working abroad. He was a short tempered man, but witty at times with us and with his wife, giving her courage. His temperament, made her scary at many times as he interacted with the hospital staff. However, he was very nice.

Talking to him as we introduced we became very close, and discussing further our roots, we realized, we have some common friends. My school mate Sarath’s father Dr. Sudhakaran was a friend of him when he was serving with the Navy at Cochin Naval base. After all, this world is really small.

Mrs. Ray talked to us very closely and openly whenever he was not with her. She talked a lot to our Amma. On the second day of her arrival, amma was still keeping conscious self, although her conditions were becoming severe. A sweet girl from the Yoga and meditation division of the hospital came to Mrs. Ray and was giving her a discourse of Vedas and meditation. She was narrating her several incidents from our epics to give courage and boost her morale to fight the disease, along with some simple techniques. Me and amma were overhearing it from the other side of the room. After the little girl left, she expressed a desire to my wife, I too wanted to do this course, when I recover.

That afternoon Mrs Ray was discharged after her course of treatment was finished. It rained heavily, and we were alone in the room. Amma was sad, why all others coming and going and she was still there.

I thought may be next day, I will ask the doctor to change her to the bed near to the window, so that she will also recover and be able to come back home. But, it never happened, or I never got a chance to speak about it even.

Evening came, and as we listened to the sound of rain from our side of the room, our Amma was recapitulating the stories she listened overhearing from the other side with me. Again, she expressed a desire to learn from that girl the art of meditation technique that she explained. I promised her, I will call her the next day, for our Amma.

Unfortunately, all stories in this world do not have a happy ending. This one too.

Although, I went and booked her for coming to our room to teach our amma yoga and relaxation technique, that afternoon, she developed serious complications related to her disease. Slowly she fell into an unconscious state.... The TV programme that evening being showed was one on learning Hanuman Chalissa, and as it was aired, I felt her tapping her hand slowly and rhythmically for the first time in her life, to the rhythamic chants and narrations and explanations going on. Soon, she had to be shifted to the ICU and then to be put on ventilator as she never regained her conscious self..... Was it a farewell programme to divine world....
For so many things we do not have any answer in this world.. This is one such thing.

She never returned from there, although till the last moment of her conscious self, she was confident, she will come back safe and be with us for a long time. Her hands held close and tight mine as I stood near to her.......

She will be there and here, forever and ever.

I am sorry Amma, it was probably one wish of yours that I couldn't fulfill and of course my Aviyal..... Happy New Year Amma........... I am sorry, I am helpless to control my tears............

Rituals at Sreerangapattanam

Srirangapatna (also spelt as Srirangapattana) is a small town in Mandya district of Karnataka, 19 kms away from Mysore. The entire town is surrounded by river Kaveri.

The Paschima Vaahini section of the Kaveri at Srirangapattana is considered especially sacred. People come from far and wide to immerse the ashes of the departed and perform obsequies to their ancestors in these waters.

Ammas ashes were immersed in this river.

There were many others who came to do the same. It was rainy season and the water thus was clean and good flow and whirlpools were there in plenty.

Pithrutharppanam at Thirunavaya Nava Mukunda Temple

It was our first visit to this famous temple, Thirunavaya Nava Mukunda Temple.

Thiruvanaya Navamukunda Temple, near Ponnani in Malappuram district is situated on the banks of the river Bharathapuzha.

Thirunavaya was once the capital of Perumpadapu Swaroopam. It is indeed the cradle of culture in northern Kerala. Holding immense historical importance, this is the place where 'Mamangam', a grand assembly of the rulers of Kerala was held once every 12 years, in olden times. This extravagant festival was held for the last time in 1755 AD.

The famous and ancient Thirunavaya Temple, known throughout the country as an ancient teaching-centre of the Vedas, was once plundered and destroyed by Tipu Sultan's army. It was the Zamorin who repaired the temple later.

Thirunavaya is considered equivalent to Varanasi because of the presence of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma temples.

It is said to be very auspicious to do the religious rituals at the banks of this famous temple to departed souls within and after the stipulated ceremonial days associated with death of our relatives. Therefore, it was our wish to be here on the 12^th day of our ammas demise.

The temple is very well organised and the priests or acharyas for doing these detailed pooja and kriyas are fully devoted and never showed any sign of greed for money, normally associated with those doing services for such rituals.

We were recommended to meet Sri Unnikrishnan Elayath (Mobile : 00 91 9249259226) who is one of the senior most amongst them. Kriyas are done in three batches, starting as early as 5:00 am. The second batch start at 7:00 am and then the third at 09:00 am. It takes normally one and half hour to complete the full set of rituals. He does it in such a way that those who are doing the rituals really feels the presence of their close ones who left them from this world.

It should be noted to carry a coin along with you when going to perform the rituals as there are procedures to place the coin and then offer prayers. For those who do not carry them, he himself gives the coin. It is advisable to offer a nominal dakshina after the rituals and prayers associated. However, he never insists on it, and saw many leaving immediately without offering any dakshina or namaskaram to the priest.

It was really satisfying to see at least one more place of religious importance where greed for money did not rule over the rituals and sanctity associated.

If you ask me, what is the most happiest thing happening, it is our visit to this small unit each week, or whenever I am there. The children are so happy to learn Computer, Mathematics and English. The glow on their innocent face, when they see us, it's difficult to express in words. One has to experience.

Week 3, we had three new additional tutors and volunteers - Mahesh Nair, Mr. Srivastava and their little son.... Mr. Srivastava assisted us in cleaning up the computer hard disks, whereas Mahesh assisted in giving lessons. But, the most important member our little master Srivastava was the one who gave life to the entire afternoon.

The children were very happy to see him and straightaway brought a cricket bat and ball and they started playing. It was a divine experience.

Dear Friends,

Om Sai Ram.

With the grace and blessing of all Gurus and Gods, we were able to launch the computer coaching class for children at Sai Ashrayadham, Kadugodi, Bengaluru.

Initial plans were to start with computer basic skills and more children were interested and participated in it on their on will.

I append below an UNEDITED version of email from my wife Rajashree on the 1st day of this project:

"We left at 1:45 pm. Before leaving, I prayed a lot to BABA and our amma to guide and bless me to teach these children in the best possible way.Went along with Mrs.Pragya and mon for the class.

The children were happy to see us. Initially all the elder boys aged above 12 years joined. But later i saw so many other younger enthusiasts eagerly peeping through the window. Then I allowed them also to join. They were simply thrilled.

They were so happy to learn. They showed so much interest . They have very good grasping power also.

When I asked them simple questions like the full form of CPU, they just shot back with the correct answer. Then I explained to them the significance of CPU

Today being the first class, we took around the whole system. All of them sat throughout the class keenly listening to whatever we were teaching them.Some of them have drawn some pictures in their books. I shall email you those drawings also.

It was a nice experience spending so much time with these children. WE HAVE A LOT TO LEARN FROM THEM WHEN WE CRIB ABOUT SMALL SMALL PROBLEMS.

THEY ARE ALWAYS SMILING THROUGH THE PAIN AND SO GOD FEARING.

Monu also enjoyed seeing them show so much interest in learning computer.

When we left, they asked us - 'Aunty neenu saturday bharthiya'. We told them we will surely come.

It did not end there, the children were keen to show interest in learning English, and Mathematics, for which assistance will be provided during the class timings. Medium of instruction for children will be English and they are requested to speak in English and they will in turn teach the guides basic Kannada. Mathematics support will be given by Suraj (of course, he has to share all the mathematical skills his grandma affectionately showered on him throughout). Computing skills be extended by Rajashree and Pragya.

Thanks to all the three of you for this great FIRST STEP.

To tell you, I knew they were a group of children and a power house of talents, when I listened 24 of them singing bhajans before the Annadhanam, on 19th November 2011. The vibration I received was just the same that one gets in the bhajan hall of Puttaparthi with more than 20 or 30 thousands of devotees singing with one voice and devotion... What they need is a Tabala or dolak.. Everything will come, with our gurus blessings.

Sincere thanks to Mrs. Pragya for coming forward to extend a helping hand to this noble project and to my loving wife Rajashree and son Suraj.

Continuing our efforts with the dream project, “e Nidhi SREENidhi”, we have come across anopportunity to educate basic computing skills to children at SAI ASHRAYADHAM,which is close to our apartment complex.

The idea is to impart knowledge and training for thechildren there to operate computer, learn the basics, and develop theirinterest so that they can operate computer terminals and kiosks enabling themto look for a first hand opportunity at malls and organization at data entrypersonnel, or console operators.

We have met and discussed Shri. A P N Sharma, who is theFounder Trustee of the SAI ASHRAYADHAM and have come out with a plan to conductthese classes on every Saturday between 2 PM and 4 PM.

This Crossing is waiting for a tragedy - wish the railway / authorities open their eyes before it is too late

I have written here earlier too about the need for a pedestrian overbridge at the Whitefield railway crossing. It is labelled clearly by the railway authorities that "Trespassing is prohibited". But it looks like there ends there (Railway's) responsibility. When they built the flyover and closed this railway gate permanently, they never thought options for the public to:

- reach the railway station from the bus station side conveniently - other than to go over the 1 kms approximately lengthy bridge and come down and then reach across

- to install necessary street light for public

- to consider the huge number of public who rely that route mainly to reach the bus station, railway station from both sides and the ashram and market and shopping area and residential area situated on one side of the gate.

- never ever thought about the elderly or rather even young who has to go across two or even three waiting trains, which can move any time when the pass underneath them

- or even never ever thought about the public who has to go past the railway track which is often made filthy by the excretory output from the passing train

The sad thing is that this case is made aware to the legislator, railway authorities, electricity board, bus terminal authorities and even police. It looks like someone somewhere is competing with the other as to who will make the first step to solve this issue.

The day is not too far, when we will get to hear a tragedy of someone getting run over by a starting train, which has stopped when they tried to move down under.

I really pity everyone for this plight, especially the elders and sick, when even young find it difficult to cross over.

Hope this post and the photo and the video in the attached link (as I cannot post videos here) open the eyes of general public who uses this route and the authorities to find immediate solution to resolve this issue and build a flyover to have safe journey across, and install necesary and sufficient lighting on both sides.

I tried my best efforts to alert all concerned about this danger several times, and look forward to added assistance from Praja members and general public to resolve this.

The October 2011 editiorial of KNSS (Karnataka Nair Services Society) News Bulletin came out with an important topic - " A Will". As a person who interact with many during emergency situation, I have noticed several times families left stranded with no guidelines as to assets and liabilities of their heads or bread earners. The topic detailed is therefore very important.

In addition, I have also noticed that many of us do not carry valid contact numbers to reach near and dear ones in case of an emergency. There is a need for such a document carried along with valid contact details, blood group and other relevant instructions such as health conditions (allergy/operations carried out etc), which will help assist emergency assistance.

With profound sadness, I write to you today (3rd November 2011) the demise of my mother in law Mrs Vijayalekshmy Menon, at HCG Hospital, Bangalore at 8:50 pm. A Kerala state Badminton player and as a person with definite objectives in life and will power to fight, she really fought her final battle with cancer, aggressively than anyone and left me and my family with lots of memories for the future without her.

She worked as a teacher of mathematics at St George School Delhi, St Thomas School Bangalore and later as Librarian at Our Own English High School Abu Dhabi.

Mrs Vijayalekshmy Menon is survived by her only daughter Rajashree, grandson Suraj and brothers Joy, Santhan, Sethu and Venu.

Her husand Late MRK Menon and son Late Rajeev Menon passed away some years ago.

Cremation will be conducted as per Hindu rites at Kalpally electric crematorium, Bangalore on 4th November 2011 at 11:00 am.

Being with her during the entire period of her final week in this earth and especially the last 3 days, I really felt the campaigners for Breast Cancer should change it's iconic color from Pink to Red Color and also doubt whether these campaigns on Breast Cancer Care and Awareness really reaching to the audience and purpose intended.

Radio stations in the UAE can play an important role in educating traffic safety to road users. After listening to various radio channels in the past few days I suggest an increased voluntary participation by radio jockeys from all prominent radio stations to talk about the importance of not using mobile phones while driving — or using it diligently with appropriate hands-free equipment. Radio stations should implement a check to not entertain a caller if he or she is not using such equipment while participating in phone-in programmes. Can the radio stations, which are doing a wonderful job in passing out useful information and entertainment to listeners, include this in their daily agenda? Could the authorities also ensure that an appropriate guideline is issued to radio stations on this subject?

Off the coastline of Abu Dhabi lies a unique wonder of Nature, wild and undisturbed by human activity, Bu Tinah Island. Not many people in the UAE are familiar with this natural treasure. It is now one of the 28 official finalists for the New7Wonders of Nature, a worldwide campaign where people can nominate and vote for the seven most remarkable, awe-inspiring natural locations and features on our planet.

Bu Tinah is host to critical marine habitats. Seabirds, such as the flamingo and osprey, diverse species of dolphins and critically endangered turtles like the hawksbill, can all be found in and around the island.

The island's waters are also home to the planet's second largest population of dugongs, a large marine mammal which is globally threatened.

It is rich in biodiversity and lies within the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, the region's first and largest Unesco-designated marine biosphere reserve. Fishing and the collection of turtle eggs are prohibited on the island, which is closed to visitors, to ensure its continued survival and protection.

A special campaign to make Bu Tinah one of the new seven wonders of nature has been initiated by the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD). People may visit www.vote7.com and use the "vote now" option to choose their seven wonders.

They have also organised an exhibition, which is held daily at the Abu Dhabi Corniche to create awareness about the campaign.

It is extremely interesting and informative for children and adults alike. Visitors can also vote in designated kiosks set up inside a dome-shaped replica of this natural wonder.

On Tuesday, October 18, 2011, a delegation comprised of His Excellency Colonel Ali Saif Alndas, Director of Al Dhaid Police Department, His Excellency Misbah Aajeed Ketbi, Chairman of Maliha Cultural & Sport Club and a Member of the Federal National Council—UAE, His Excellency Mohamed Ali Saif, Mayor of Maliha, His Excellency Misbah Saif Ketbi, Director of Maliha Municipal, His Excellency Rashid Mahaan, Chairman of Parents of Students in the Central Region Senate at Al Dhaid, His Excellency Saeed bin Laith Tunaiji, Member of the Parents of the Students Senate, and 9 of the parents of students at Al Dhaid Branch visited Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), a nonprofit organization located in United Arab Emirates which aims at providing advocacy, inclusion, and empowerment for people with disabilities under the Director Generalship of Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, in order to increase communication and cooperation with the activities of the local community in Sharjah.

During the visit, a brief introduction about the services provided at the Al Dhaid branch was conducted. Visitors then discussed their expectations for this meeting. They were provided with a tour of SCHS. At the conclusion of the visit, delegation members expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the invitation and admiration of the efforts of the administrative staff and technical support team in providing the best services for children with disabilities. They expressed their willingness to cooperate with the objectives set by the branch to increase the level of coordination with local institutions and activities taking place in the community.

On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, His Highness Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum launched the official website of the Disabled Persons Federation at the Dubai Club for Special Sports, declaring the kickoff season to be in 2011-2012. This came during the grand celebration held by the Board of Directors of the Disabled Persons' Federation to begin the new season and honor its successful partners. The ceremony was attended by Prince Hans, District Chief of Ictn Stein, located between Switzerland and Austria and President of Foote Paul Azemmour Establishment, Ibrahim Abdul Malik, Secretary-General of the Public Authority for Youth Welfare and Sports, Khalid Cannon, Assistant Secretary of the Board, Dr. Ahmed Saad Al-Sharif, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, Mohamed Mohammed Fadel Hamli, Chairperson of Disabled Persons' Federation, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Vice President of the FIA, Nassan Thani Juma, Vice President of the Disabled Persons' Federation and Chief Executive of the Special Olympics, and Majid Osaimi, Secretary of the Federation and the host of the ceremony. The celebration began with the United Arab Emirates National Anthem followed by a blessed recitation from the Holy Quran by athlete Rashied Said. Mohammed Fadel Hamli then gave an introductory speech in which he directed his thanks to SCHS for its unlimited support of the Knights of Determination. He praised the high attendance of this event, which doubled with mention to the thought that the number of practitioners are increasing rapidly which is good for people with disabilities. Currently, over 1000 athletes are registered.

There were over 113 medals won last year, by participating in 15 foreign championships. Sharjah will host the World Games of Disability and Amputation for the first time next December. The audiences interaction with the documentary film that displays the march of success of the Knights of Determination to try to overcome the barrier of disability and raise their country’s flag in international tournaments was extraordinary. Mr. Abdullah Khalil Ahli, Head of the Deaf Committee revealed the committee’s motto. His Highness Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum launched the official website of the Disabled Persons' Federation and honored agencies, institutions, councils, and different sports clubs for the disabled. SCHS’s 3 branches in Al Dhaid, Khorfakhan, Kalba were among honored institutions for their unlimited cooperation with the federation. Mr. Ahmed Al Hamadi, Head of SCHS’s Public Relations Department, received the honorary mention on behalf of SCHS. In addition, Mr. Fayez Fathi Badawi, a Teacher of Physical Education, received the honorary mention on behalf of Khorfakhan and Kalba branches. As for Al Dhaid branch, it was received by Mr. Amer Ahmed Ibrahim, a Physical Education Teacher. Abdullah Saif Al Aryani, a Shooting Champion, presented a banquet of flowers to His Highness Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum on the occasion of winning the gold medal at the World Series of Shooting which concluded recently in Al Ain.

On Tuesday, October 4^th, 2011, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Deputy Minister of Health and Assistant Director of Sharjah Medical Zone, visited Al Amal School for the Deaf, a school from Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), a nonprofit organization located in United Arab Emirates which aims at providing advocacy, inclusion, and empowerment for people with disabilities under the Director Generalship of Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi. He was received by Mrs. Afaf Al Haridi and a number of SCHS officials of departments. His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saqr Al Qasimi confirmed that excellence or superiority should not be restricted to none disabled people. People with disabilities can create and achieve in all aspects of life. They can learn and attain the highest academic degrees if they have the appropriate conditions. The guest was introduced to the teaching methods used by teachers in Al Amal School. He witnessed how the students at Al Amal school interact with their teachers and supervisors during lessons. This was not his first visit to the school. He had the chance to see the same students who often attend Al Thiqa Club for the Handicapped. In a meeting with students and teaching staff at the school, His Excellency heard a group of requests by students. The most notably was the establishment of a special office for persons with disabilities in hospitals and health centers with workers proficient in sign language. Students emphasized the importance of providing hearing aids to those who are not able to buy them, and strengthen coordination between the ministry and SCHS through the organization through training courses in first aid as well as specific dates to visit SCHS by doctors to conduct medical exams for students. Students’ demands also included: working on the nomination of a number of professional lecturers to deliver lectures on medical awareness, providing support and care for programs of joint sports and health activities, and open jobs for people with disabilities.

His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Deputy Minister of Health and Assistant Director of Sharjah Medical Zone, took notes of all these requests, he said that work will begin next week to implement as much as possible of these demands. He suggested that students formulate a special Health Committee of several students in order to coordinate with the Ministry of Health for the success of joint action. He said, “there are a number of people with disabilities working in a number of hospitals who are familiar with sign language, and we will work in the future to increase this number of staff. A number of doctors in various specialties are going to be sent to conduct free examinations for SCHS’s students, teachers, and employees in addition to organizing a number of training courses on first aid for the benefit of students and teachers”. Moreover, He confirmed the importance of continuing these activities with Al Amal School for the Deaf because of the benefits that deaf students, who deserve support and assistance, can gain from various individuals and institutions of society. At the end of the visit, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saqr Al Qasimi received a souvenir as a token of love and appreciation from students, who wished for visits in the future near future. He recorded that he was very happy with his visit in SCHS’s guestbook.

On Tuesday, October 4^th, 2011, a delegation from the Department of Community Services of Students Affairs Office of American University of Sharjah (AUS) visited Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), a nonprofit organization located in United Arab Emirates which aims at providing advocacy, inclusion, and empowerment for people with disabilities under the Director Generalship of Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, to support the activities, events and programs offered by SCHS to people with disabilities. These services correspond to AUS’s vision and objectives. H.H Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Vice President of Sharjah Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Director General of SCHS, gladly received the guests. The delegation included Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Ms. Aisha Ali, Director of Community Service Programs, and Mr. Monqith Taha, Director of the Development of Student Affairs who stressed that cooperation with SCHS is very important for AUS due to the uniqueness of this prestigious institution in the field of humanitarian and voluntary services. According to Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, seeking to sign an agreement of cooperation and partnership between SCHS and AUS to work on instilling a spirit of volunteerism in the hearts of students, who will participate in SCHS’s activities and events such as Al Amal Camp, was one primary reason for this visit. In return, students with disabilities will be allowed to participate in AUS’s activities such as the charitable marathon, hand by hand program, and international day.

The Vice Chancellor for Students Affairs quoted that “It is important for the AUS to train its students of the importance of working people with disabilities, in addition to supporting SCHS in the implementation of mobilization programs. It aims at integrating people with disabilities in the community and investing the energies and abilities of students in supporting the goals of SCHS, which focus on awareness and prevention of disability. Among the projects that will be examined and worked on in the future, is motivating the students of architecture to do their seminars on accessibility of buildings for people with disabilities in general. Also the establishment of joint exhibitions for the gifted disabled and the adoption of theatrical works that address disability issues as well as to examine the possibility of establishing an office to support people with disabilities on campus”. Dr Al Shehhi noted that “these mutual visits between SCHS and AUS have had a huge impact on the interaction of students with disabilities in being able to gain access and change conceptions about prejudices and negative misconceptions. These students, will have the positive role of acting on the issues of persons with disabilities by optimization and support through decisions which are in the best interest of the disabled and the interest of society in general”.

On Thursday, October 6^th, 2011, H.H Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), a nonprofit organization located in the United Arab Emirates which aims at providing advocacy, education, and empowerment for people with disabilities, and Mr. Abdul Razak Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Islamic Bank-Foundation (DIB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support education, rehabilitation and training services provided by SCHS to people with disabilities in order to strengthen the cooperation and support of the strategic partnership between SCHS and DIB-Foundation to further enhance the support of people with disabilities and low income people eligible for Zakat. Abdul Razak Abdullah said that the signing of this agreement is the embodiment of the importance of the role of social responsibility and joint cooperation between the two parties for the best interest of people with disabilities to complete their education, training and rehabilitation. The institution will bear part of the fees prescribed for them, especially those who were unable to pay. He added that the signing of the memorandum of understanding comes through the Foundation's vision of the importance of cooperation with other bodies and institutions of humanitarian charities that support and help people with disabilities. It is highlighting the leading role played by Dubai Islamic Bank in serving the community citizens and residents in the UAE. Mr. Abdul Razak Abdullah is proud to work with SCHS who has become renowned in providing services to people with disabilities at local, Arab, and regional levels. All staff at DIB are happy to cooperate with this prestigious organization who has a concern of educating and rehabilitating those with disabilities.

H.H Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi said that the Memorandum of Understanding between SCHS and DIB-Foundation is an important step in consolidating the bonds of cooperation between the two parties to serve the community in general and persons with disabilities in particular. As the memorandum has placed the comfort of people with disabilities on top of the list of its goals. As an expression of thanks and appreciation for the constructive cooperation with SCHS, Mr. Jihad Abdel Qader, Head of SCHS’s Financial Resources Department, gave a memorial shield to Mr. Abdul Razak Abdullah who received it with gratitude. Mr. Abdul Razak Abdullah was provided with a tour of Al Wafaa School for Developmental Training where he listened to a detailed explanation by Mrs. Mona Abdel Kareem, School’s Principal, on the mechanisms for the education of persons with intellectual disabilities and the methods used in educating them to further develop their abilities. It is worth mentioning that DIB-Foundation of Dubai Islamic Bank had provided financial contribution to SCHS in its Zakat campaign which was organized during the holy month of Ramadan under the slogan "We are your children " one million AED (1,000,000) was donated to support the humanitarian services provided by SCHS to persons with disabilities of different nationalities, who are unable to cover tuition and other services such as training, rehabilitation, treatment, and counseling.

Magical moments

School days are the wonderful period in our lives. I believe so now, not then. During my school days, we used to have a monthly cultural programme for students and we all looked forward to it.

It used to be a screening of a documentary movie (mostly Charlie Chaplin’s), a puppet show or a special event we all looked forward to — the magic show.

More than any other event, crowds would flock to this event because of the element of mystery surrounding the show. We never missed any opportunity. The memories of one or two such shows are everlasting in my mind. One was by PC Sorcar.

The magician came in his special magic dress and brought out many things from nowhere. A rabbit, a dove, and lots of chocolate.

He even “cut” one of his team members into two pieces. And he pocketed our teacher’s wristwatch using his magic wand. It was amazing for all of us.

Since then, I haven’t had a chance to watch a magic show. I hear that the Indian Social and Cultural Centre in Abu Dhabi is organising a magic show by the famous Indian magician Professor Gopinath Muthukad on Oct.28 at the National Theatre, Abu Dhabi.

He is a magician with a mission. He has a stupendous way to interact with children and captivates their hearts and instils good values in them.

I am looking forward to see him perform in Abu Dhabi. It adds more significance, when it is being held as part of a series of events held in commemoration of the 40th UAE National Day.
